The New Jersey courts had rarely seen a hero quite like Judge Stephen Thompson.
A decorated Army veteran who lost a leg after being shot 20 times in the Vietnamese jungle, he came home to earn a law degree. He rose to the state bench, where he presided over Megan's Law cases, earned a reputation for fairness and balance and later helped make the state's first drug court an unqualified success.
Yesterday, that same Stephen Thompson went on trial, accused of going to Russia in 2002 to perform sex acts with a teenage boy. He is accused of videotaping that crime and of keeping a trove of child pornography -- videotapes, diskettes, photos and literature from the North American Man/Boy Love Association -- in his two homes.
The 59-year-old judge sat in a Camden federal courtroom yesterday, slightly stoop-shouldered in a sage green suit, with his eyes straight ahead and crutches under the table as the difference between his public and private lives was presented in stark relief.
The prosecution called his crimes horrendous and referred graphically to his immense store of videotaped sexual encounters with young men and boys. Prosecutors plan to show a 40-minute video made in Russia in which, they say, the judge is gleeful when the boy disrobes. As a judge and a man who overcame profound adversity, they said, he should have known better.
The defense argued that the judge is a tragic American hero, who despite his impressive record and personal accomplishments, is insane in his fixation on the virility he lost as a result of the war injuries that not only traumatized him but also damaged his brain.
The federal trial, likely to last a month, is expected to put the jury squarely in the middle of a choice between justice and mercy.

A trip to Russia? Videotaping? If this guy had done this on the spur of the moment in a moment of weakness, then they might have some grounds for the mercy part. As it is this is as big as the difference between causing and accidental death due to negligence and hiring a hit man to kill your wife for the insurance money, while you're having an affair with the rich lady down the street. Give me a break! He's scared cause he knows what's in store.

What happened to this guy in Vietnam is incredible. From the article:
"He was sent to Vietnam on July 4, 1969. Barely three weeks after arriving, his unit was ambushed. As Thompson tried to survive by strangling a Vietnamese soldier, a fellow American came to his aid. But his compatriot's M16 went off, and 20 bullets went into Thompson's leg and guts.

It's just a shame to hear how a guy who came back from all that would go on to wreck a bunch of young kids' lives. For all this man accomplished and overcame in his life, there's really nothing to redeem that.

As the images were shown on widescreen televisions on either side of the jury box, most jurors -- who were instructed to look at each piece of evidence -- glanced at each one for only a second before looking away.
During testimony Thursday, Camden County Prosecutor's Office investigator Grace Clodfelter told jurors about the search of Thompson's bayfront home in Avalon on April 30, 2003. Authorities allegedly found a cache of child pornography inside a locked, fireproof safe in the master bedroom.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven D'Aguanno showed about half of the 45-minute tape to the jury before switching to a display of short film clips and still photographs. Some of the video segments and photos, many from Russian sources, depicted boys who appeared to be as young as 6.
Baker, the defense attorney, did not object to any of the items presented as evidence, nor did he cross-examine Clodfelter or the prosecution's next witness, FBI agent D. Justin Price.
Price, a member of the agency's computer-analysis response team based in Philadelphia, told jurors that Thompson had purchased and installed software on three computers that promised to protect a user's identity and to hide his activities on the Internet. A search of Thompson's computers, however, still detected Web sites that Thompson visited.
Price's examination showed Thompson used one of those pieces of software at least 6,000 times to contact Web sites that offer sexually explicit photographs of young boys.
Thompson last used the software the day before investigators simultaneously executed search warrants on his homes in Haddon Township and Avalon, and his chambers at the Camden County Hall of Justice.
If this isn't proof that child molesters and those into child porn are sick devils who cry out for execution, I don't know what is.
On another thread one person just criticized me for advocating execution for child molesters. I don't understand such people. Maybe he never had children. One instance of being molested often ruins a child for life. I can't even imagine what would happen to a child who has been used for pornography. The only way to stamp out this evil is executing those who make it and sell it, and public caning of those who buy it. Or something like that.
I don't know, Harry - people take this horrible crime so lightly - it's as though they think the criminals who use children sexually have some redeeming feature. People who use children that way - either personally, or in the production of child pornography - have abdicated their membership in the human race.
