Bush: Weak terror response led to 9/11

Sep 22, 2005, 19:00 GMT

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- President Bush said withdrawing from Iraq would be a mistake that would embolden terrorists just as U.S. responses to other attacks led to 9/11 hijackings.

Speaking Thursday at the Pentagon after an update on the war on terror, Bush said a pullback would be seen as weakness and make the United States less safe.

'The terrorists saw our response to the hostage crisis in Iran, the bombings in the Marine barracks in Lebanon, the first World Trade Center attack, the killing of American soldiers in Somalia, the destruction of two U.S. embassies in Africa and the attack on the USS Cole,' Bush said. 'The terrorists concluded that we lacked the courage and character to defend ourselves and so they attacked us.'

It was the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, carried out by al-Qaida operatives, that led Bush to launch the war on terror with an attack on Afghanistan, where al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden had been given sanctuary. Bush links the fighting in Iraq with the war on terror.

The president said the plan is to follow a strategy of making political gains in the affected counties, while training local personnel to assume security operations.

I love it and I hope to hear more of it - next time with something other then the captive and predictable audience of the Pentagon, God love them. I want to hear it out in public, loud and clear and often.

Way to go, Dubya.

The MSM will be "reeling" from the mean-spiritedness and shameless pettiness of this comment against such a hard-working and beloved former president.

What really really pi**es me off is that his statement will get only a third of attention to whatever Clinton lies about...I'm sure CNN, et al will show him making this statement over and over again just like they do when Clinton LIES!

He didn't really strike back at Clinton... after all the first two events happened under Carter's and Reagan's watch...

"No money for Katrina", "No money for Rita",...

I'd rather see, "No money for Palestine, no $$ for Egypt, etc. THAT would have more effect!

President Bush said this so many times before but I do not think you were listening, were you? President Bush works and thinks as a great leader not as a cheap shot thrower. "What!!! Clinton said this about me so let me get back at this SOB and destroy him." He does not think and act this way and he should not. Great leaders ignore the popularity polls, ignore the cheap shots by useless people like Clinton, and do what they think is right. President Bush is this great leader.

From the first time Arafat committed a terrorist act in the 60's, through being honored at the White House by Clinton, continuing to Bush's praise at the White House of his successor, terror has been rewarded.

It continues to this minute.
