BALTIMORE - The mayor of Baltimore is expected to announce his bid later this week for the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich after spending several months considering a run for higher office.
Mayor Martin O'Malley's campaign said he would "make a major announcement concerning the future of Maryland and his political future" on Wednesday.
O'Malley, who was re-elected to a second term as mayor last year with 87 percent of the vote, has touted Baltimore's "comeback" during recent appearances throughout the state.
"I have enjoyed visiting each part of our great state, learning from the thousands of people that I have talked to, hearing people's concerns, thoughts and ideas for how Maryland can do better, and sharing the story of Baltimore's comeback with the state of Maryland," O'Malley said in statement.
Ehrlich is expected to run for a second term next year.
During talks with voters, O'Malley points to a drop in the city's overall crime rate, rising test scores among younger children and renewed investments.
But being mayor of a big city also means O'Malley has some political baggage. The city's murder rate, though down since O'Malley took office in 1999, has not dropped as rapidly as he promised and remains higher than many cities of comparable size.
Who will MD4BUSH vote FoR?

In other news, the sky is blue and the Pope is Catholic.
The Democratic primary will be between Doug Duncan, Chief Executive of Montgomery County (a wealthy county) and Verrry generous to poor residents, including those who have lost their documents, and the boy Mayor of Baltimore, a very poor city where every problem of poor leadership has been blamed on the closed checkbook of the mean Republican Ehrlich admin.
The dynamics should be quite interesting. The only thing these two men bring to their debates will be who can promise the most goodies to Marylanders.
Since Md politics has been dominated by Dems for years, until Ehrlich's win, a September primary date was no problem. Now, however, that date means that Duncan and O'Malley have to trash each other all summer, instead of a winner fighting Ehrlich.
So - following the parliamentary rules of the state of New Jersey, [if a law does not work for a democrat - change it] the Md legislature wants to change the law to move the primary date back to the beginning of summer.
Should be interesting to watch.
I thought that the popular Mfume had been essentially promised the Democrat nod to go against Ehrlich.
Mfume is not running for Governor, he's running for U.S. Senator against Michael Stelle.
The devil you say! I'm glad I took my heart medication before I read this.
Wow, things will be getting UGLY there.
He's a snake from what I see.
Old school knuckle biter.
From drugs to crime to abysmal school statistics to high taxation, his record is one of abject failure. Additionally, he piss'd me off with his seditious Bush bashing remarks during a critical time.
I say, "Bring Him On". He the perfect poster child of what a dimocRAT is all about.
