OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada will put forward a resolution in the United Nations shortly accusing Iran of human rights violations, Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew said on Wednesday.
"Iran has not lived up to its international human rights obligations and has not conformed with past U.N. resolutions on this matter. We believe this must change," Pettigrew said in a statement.
Canada presented similar resolutions to the United Nations in both 2003 and 2004. The U.N.'s General Assembly adopted the 2004 resolution with 71 votes in favor, 54 against and 55 abstentions.
Canada and Iran are at loggerheads over the case of Zahra Kazemi, a Canadian reporter who died of head injuries in 2003 after being arrested in Tehran. Canada has twice withdrawn its ambassador over the affair and accuses Iranian authorities of failing to investigate the death properly.
Iran's conservative judiciary initially said Kazemi had died of a stroke but an investigation by the government revealed she had received a heavy blow during questioning which caused a brain hemorrhage.

So they're trying to use the UN to do something about this??? I bet Iran is just trembling with fear. I would be more afraid of a toy poodle than I would a blue helmet holding a gun.

The Iranian mullahs have threatened an oil embargo if they are given the smacking they deserve for their tyrrany and nuclear ambitions.
Canada knows this. They also know it will raise the price per barrel for oil even further, making Alberta's oil fields even more profitable.
So Canada is stirring the pot ... all in the name "human rights abuses".
How typically Canadian.

That's ridiculous. The Iranian oil "embargo" is imaginary and Canada knows that as well.
Canada is doing this solely because they think these international resolutions mean something, which is even dumber than oil angle.

'Yes, you might be right that UN is a useless piece of crap'
Thank you. I do feel that I am right, that the UN is a useless piece of crap.
".... it [the UN] may be unifying the Iranian people against their oppressors and they will feel they are not left alone!"
I personally don't see how this is possible. First, I would guess that the majority, if not all, of the media in Iran is state-controlled. Second, the UN is a group of dictators, socialists, and commies. That would be the only unifying characteristic of it. In which case, the Mullah's, or any oppressor for that matter, should feel right at home.

By the state-controlled media, I also mean to say that the population there would probably be unaware of anything that would threaten the state.
