sures seems like Kilgore is going for teh moderate vote.

It's my understanding that that is the definition of a "moderate"; They swing both ways. (You get them to swing your way if you want to win.)

Put down the bong? If he's stupid enough to belive that, he's smoking something even more potent, methinks. He probably aughta put down the crack pipe in that situation.

VCDL was told we would never get shall issue CHP in Virginia also. I guess I'm smoking the same stuff nowadays that I was then.

........his record on gun rights is perfect.

Not good enough...........that black mark when it comes to taxes wipes it out TOTALLY. I'm one of those middle class folks that bought a house BEFORE his tax increase and refinanced AFTER it......I'm also a smoker.

Warner may have been terrific on firearms issues - but he s****d on just about everything else.

But in the end - it really doesn't matter who is in the Governor's Mansion.........the legislature can tell him/her to go pack sand - as long as we have a big enough majority with some BACKBONE.

Unfortunately that is not going to happen this year - so the last thing we need is a Warner wannabe that is anti-2nd amendment and we all know kaine is just that. And we sure as heck don't need a crackpot that states from the get go he WILL increase taxes even more.

The tax issue is my only real gripe with Warner. Gilmore dropped ball also - he had the public support to repeal the car tax and settled for a real half baked non-win. We still have the car tax.

The legislature is the problem - curiously the same Republicans who vote for higher taxes are non-responders to VCDL surveys also. A lot also getr NRA A ratings.

So you'll be voting for the pro-abortion "independent"?

A little background on me so maybe you understand a bit more where I am coming from............I've only lived in Virginia since 2003, although we had made the decision to move here in 2000. So I am still learning the ins and outs of the politics of VA.......but I am no novice to state politics - I spent 20 years earning a living dealing with them in Delaware, first in radio as a reporter and then as a lobbyist.

Corin Stormhands has been a godsend to me with giving me links to places where I can learn. I showed up in Delaware for my first job in radio 10 DAYS before the 1982 election - talk about having to take some crash courses and trial by fire.

Anyway, I can't tell you how many candidate surveys I sent out over the years for various groups that I rarely got responses from.......it is very discouraging. The really sad thing about those that did respond - not a single one ever voted the way they said they would on the survey.

Many folks on FR probably think I should be opposing Kilgore because of the job his wife just recently resigned from.........can't think of the title right now, but it is funded by cigarette taxes to make continue pushing the idea that smokers are 2nd class citizens. My position regarding tobacco and those that choose to use it has been known since the day I signed up here - but I have NEVER been a one issue person.

I know this is rather disjointed, and probably makes no sense - but in a nutshell I can understand VCDL being upset Kilgore didn't respond to the survey - but it makes no nevermind to me. The fact he doesn't seem to be asking the staff member who made, what I consider to be, an out of line comment about someone at VCDL an apology, is a problem and I'm not happy about that.

(please note, I am only pinging Corin because I am mentioning him)

I'll be writting-in "Phillip Van Cleave". That'll let Kilgore know not to trifle with my God-given rights and that he should be more careful about picking his staff the next time he runs for office. Unless Kilgore publically apologizes to Mr. Van Cleave and fires his staffer who made the insult........he can pound sand.

A belated welcome to VA Gabz!

I didn't know Kilgore's wife worked for the anti-smoking propagnda outfit. I am an ex-smoker but I have always been offended that the tobacco companies are paying for commericals that paint them as evil. Eating junk food like Sarah Lee cakes and Lays Potatoe chips is not good for you either - I don't see the junk food companies being forces to educate the public about how evil they are.

If we look at what is going on with current Supreme court nominee we can see good folks can disagree - personally I think the woman may end up being an excellant justice despite her background but the unhappy folks have a right to say why they don't like the pick - maybe they will be listened to next time.

The right thing for Kilgore to do is to answer the VCDL survey and make a personal apology to Phil Van Cleave.

I really didn't mean to sound as if I was disregarding the abortion stance - just trying to point out there are also other issues.

I have to admit I'm really torn about what he should do about the VCDL survey and the staffer's comments about Mr. Van Cleave. Would answering the survey and extending an apology be the right things to do? Yes. Are they the politically best thing to do at this point after all the back and forth? I don't think so - but that is just my cynical position on politics, and could be totally wrong.

And thanks for the welcome. We love it here.

It was the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation. I ~believe~ she was appointed there by Jim Gilmore. I may have my facts wrong. She was Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth under Gilmore for a while.

FWIW, (and I've said this often on FR), the "No Car Tax" promise was good politics, bad policy. It never really eliminated the car tax. All it did/does is have the state pick up the percentage you don't have to pay.

That said, Gilmore didn't have a choice but to slow down the phase out. The recession and 9/11 hit while he was still Governor. Then the RATS and the RINOS started harping out the budget deficit...which never existed.

Projected revenues were down. But spending still went up, just by a smaller percentage.
