NASCAR CEO no fan of Confederate flag; wants sport to appeal more to minorities, women

NASCAR CEO Brian France doesn’t like fans flying Confederate flags at races as he tries to make auto racing more appealing to minorities and women.

“It’s not a flag that I look at with anything favorable. That’s for sure,” he said in an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” to be aired Sunday. “I can’t tell people what flag to fly. I can tell you the flag we get behind: It’s the American flag.”

France is trying to broaden auto racing’s appeal with minorities in places like Los Angeles, where France moved the important Labor Day NASCAR event last year, and New York, soon to have a track.

“(Reaching out to minorities) is something I work on every day. I work on it personally,” France said.

Among those efforts France counts running a NASCAR event in Mexico and establishing a training program for female and minority drivers. And he doesn’t believe the racial stereotypes associated with the Confederate flag will affect NASCAR.

“I think it’s a fading image,” France said.

Brian France is about to face a firestorm. When I go to the race here in Mich. I don't see a lot of confederate flags but the crowd is nearly half women and minorities don't seem to be terribly interested anyway.

He's asking for his fan base to desert in droves. NASCAR has it's roots in red states. Of course, as usual, it's all about money. I think he may end up losing more than he gains.

This oughtta be good. But let me let Mr. France in on something: This "minority" doesn't give a damn about NASCAR. I'd rather watch paint dry.

We could get into a heated debate about what it meant, lets not, it's come to mean more than it did. Southern pride for starters...

Think NASCAR is gonna take hold hardcore in NH, VT, or Maine?

Another outstanding "Alienate the Base" moment.

NASCAR is well on it's way to departing the south. Big tracks of the Carolinas have been kicked to the curb for western tracks.

People I know who are into racing are going back to the local tracks, some of them dirt.

"Brian France has become a metrosexual" - and I thought Jeff Gordon was the only one.

I don't watch NASCAR anymore. It ceased being about racing a long time ago. The fans haven't mattered in a while now. I wonder when it will dawn on them?

I work with a guy that went to school with him. From what my co-worker tells me, I'd have to agree with you.

I watch the pre-game part. I like the public prayer & then comes the flyover. After that I'm not interested, except that I like the Lowe's car to do well because we spend so much money there, I'm sure our name's on it as a sponsor.

Ummmmmm, ya haven't a clue as to what your talking about.

NASCAR could add 4 more races at Loudon and it still would be impossible to get a ticket.

The whole sport has become pussified.

Nobody's allowed to cuss or fight anymore.

Dale Jr. was even told by NASCAR to stop driving so aggressive. And that was over the radio during a race!

It's not just NASCAR, the sponsors are pushing that also. Races today are nothing but a 4 hour long commercial.
