Sacre Cordon Bleu! What Would Jesus Bet? Sunday, October 09, 2005 By Scott Norvell

AFP reports that the Subway sandwich shop chain has apologized for an ad campaign poking fun at French cowardice after some Francophiles in America complained that it was disrespectful.

The ad featured a cordon bleu chicken sandwich with the words, "France and chicken, somehow it just goes together." A photo of a chicken dressed like Napoleon accompanied the advertisement.

A spokesman for Subway said the campaign was meant to champion French cuisine. The ads were removed once company execs realized that people were offended, he said.

"Saying that the French are dirty or cowards is a little bit like saying the sky is blue. Nobody is going to contest it," Denis Chazelle, a long-time French resident of the Washington area, told AFP. "I think (French bashing) is worse now than it was two years ago because, although it's not as relentless as it was, it has become a lot more accepted and part of the landscape."

I'd be more impressed if they hadn't pulled the ad.

We have a long, long way to go to catch up to French intellectuals in terms of bashing anyone. So This Frenchman informs me in a brilliant book which I'd recommend to anyone who wants to understand just how bad it is there and just why this sort of story is so very silly.

OK - that decides it. I'm going to Subway for lunch tomorrow. France and chicken - going together? It's so obvious...

Everyone, come on, you know the French aren't chickens
they're more Le Cornish Hen, but not so roosterish.

Me, too. I would not want to be known as having surrendered to the French.

Shoot, that ad made me buy a few of those cordon blue sandwhiches. Everytime I go in, I would laugh so hard at the ad that the only thing I could get out was chicken cordon blue, or just point to the ad. It was ingenious.

Actually, Denis, most Americans love and admire the French. Take me, for example. The relentless French bashing is a combination of horror, at French denial that threatens the very existence of La Belle France, and the desire to shake the French into waking up in time to save themselves.

The present state of denial and hubris in France is shocking, dangerous, and horrifying.

Those who love France are screaming at the top of their lungs: "Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!"

Unfortunately, we are like a Greek chorus, warning those who have doomed themselves to inevitable tragedy.

The bashing is a wake-up call that is looooooooooooooooooooooooong overdue.
