POSTED: 11:15 am EDT October 11, 2005
UPDATED: 11:43 am EDT October 11, 2005 NEW YORK -- The informant who sparked last week's New York City subway threat alert has admitted it was a hoax, CNN reported Tuesday.
The network reported that the informant admitted providing false information.
The informant had claimed that al-Qaida operatives in Iraq were plotting to attack the city's subways using baby strollers packed with remote-controlled explosives. The reported threat said the attacks could occur as early as last Friday.
Authorities said earlier the interrogation of three suspects arrested by U.S. forces in Iraq has so far produced no information to corroborate a possible threat.
New York City's heightened subway security will slowly scale back to what it was before officials announced the supposed subway bombing threat last week.
New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly stressed that police will continue random bag searches in the subways that began in response to the bombings on the London transit system.

I heard this last week. Iraqi terrorists have been told to give false info about "pending" attacks to undermine the Bush administration.

So, the FEDS say the THREAT is specific but probably bogus BUT the locals play it safe and do the RIGHT THING. This brings out the fact of what an utter guessing game the WOT is and will be. If we take specific threats SERIOUSLY we may see this kind of hoax again and again and as SOON as we get complacent and not take it seriously then the attack happens.
It is a no win situation. I beleieve the NY authorities did the right thing and hope they continue to take all threats of this specificity seriously. 911 changed everything....for the foreseeable future.

I can see you now. After jumping from the 14th floor of the terrorist-bombed building yelling, "I thought it was a hoax!"
We should appoint you the confirmation HUB for all things terrorist!

So the next time we hear a warning, we'll just ignore it, okay, Mohammed?
Right.

Looks like the White House was correct when it did not overreact to the information. However, NY city officials are the ones who made the decision to go all out.
Of course, you will never read that in the NY Times or any other "paper of record".

Sadly, I still believe the real thing is going to come with no warning, just some clues and vague hints that only make sense afterwards.

Now we know why Bush's guys said that this was
'not a credible threat'.
This makes New York look stupid and wasteful for expending millions on unneed overtime for ignoring the Department of Homeland Security.

I am suspicious of any threat that does not include the potential for massive and widespread casualties. Even a Madrid style attack would only be effective in this country if perpetrated against multiple cities at the same moment. For OBL, it has GOT to top 911 in shock factor. He'd better hurry up or the Avian Flu will beat him to it. I'll bet he takes credit for it, though. Allah (international islamist extremeists) has already claimed credit for the Hurricanes.....

I firmly believe that most terror alerts are CYA exercises, with the CYA emphasised much more than real concern for public safety and the WOT. Yep. Apparently for the powers that be, the second report coming from a disaster, the one about who's to blame in the government, is worse than the first report about the number of deaths.
