Cowboy George (Allen) hailed as the Reagan for ’08
Sunday Times ^ | October 16, 2005 | Sarah Baxter

Posted on 10/15/2005 6:03:01 PM PDT by West Coast Conservative

A TOBACCO chewing, horse-riding, cowboy boot wearing politician called George could be the Republican party’s choice for president in 2008. With George W Bush in political freefall, speculation is intensifying about his successor. The rising star among conservatives is George Allen, senator for Virginia and former governor of the state.

The son of a famous American football coach, Allen is a minor figure compared with prominent rivals such as Senator John McCain and Rudolph Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, but he is more politically mainstream and potentially acceptable to Republican stalwarts.

Bruce Allen, general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers pro-football team, has no doubt that his elder brother can go all the way to the White House. “He has always been a leader,” he said. “I would never underestimate what he is able to do. He’s very real and that’s what makes him special.”

Those close to Allen’s unofficial campaign place his chances of winning his party’s nomination at 60-40. Although no senator has won the presidency since John F Kennedy, Allen has hands-on experience as a governor and a folksy, populist touch.

No matter how smart his suit and tie, he is never separated from his “lucky” cowboy boots. Nor will he ever give up his chewing tobacco and spittoon, according to an insider, although he is said to be a Virginia gentleman rather than a Texas swaggerer like Bush.

Sean Hannity, an influential right-wing radio and television host, has been boosting Allen’s prospects by comparing him with Ronald Reagan, a friend of Allen’s father, and declaring him capable of winning every state in the South against Hillary Clinton, the Democrat favourite.

Yeah well, they will smear him the moment he has to compromise, just as Reagan and Bush had to if he is elected.

"He was mine until I learned he voted for the "hate crimes" bill."

Still, that's not nearly as bad as some things other candidates have done.

If Condi doesn't run I my early support goes to George Allen. I agree with what Rush said about him the other day.

Interesting article. I'd like to hear more before I judge. It's way too early and this is the first time I've noticed him.

I just don't think Rice has a chance of being the nominee; however, I think she would be perfect for the VP slot. One concern I have with Condi is the fact that she has never been married, I can see the left and the media making all sorts of insinuations about this.

.I think I would like to see some righteous anger right about now....

This country needs it, especially after 5 years of Liberals trying to trash it, and undermine it.

"He was mine until I learned he voted for the "hate crimes" bill. I HATE this pc sh-t"

But people who commit crimes either hate or love those they hurt. Love conquers all, but hate is yucky. Do you have a problem with that? And why do you hate your pc sh-t? You seem quite confused and probably shouldn't be allowed to vote in your current state of mind. Chill, Republicans and Democrats differ...just ask Nancy Palosi. Unfortunately Reagan is dead. Fortunately, we got to see him in action.

"Democrats are pressing Ben Affleck, the Hollywood actor, to stand against [Allen, for Senate]."

That is just very sad.

Do you think that Condi, as a single person, would have a problem against Hillay, a woman without a husband by normal standards and a strongly suspected lesbian?

Condi would crush the beast into to pavement.

Love George Allen!!

And, this "George" is actually a conservative!

Another Reagan, definitely not another "W" - who was a big improvement over Clinton, but, aside for a few issues, is pretty far left.

Mike Pence is the one 08 potential candidate who will ALWAYS put put principle above politics and will always fight for limited government.Mike Pence will never let us down. Some of the other potential candidates have compromised with Big Government way too much.

but...didnt allen want bush to meet with cindy?

No, he did not.

BEFORE she began her media circus he said "I would have met with her." Afterwards, he said no.

He never said Bush should meet with her.
