OU student left suicide message

NORMAN - The University of Oklahoma student who died in an explosion Oct. 1 left a message on his computer that he was going to quit living, his father said.

The FBI read the message to the father Friday, after he came to Oklahoma to clear out his son's university-owned apartment.

Joel "Joe" Henry Hinrichs III, an engineering student, died when his bomb went off about 100 yards from the packed football stadium during the second quarter of OU's night game against Kansas State.

Hinrichs, 21, was from Colorado Springs, Colo. He had a reputation as a loner and had struggled at times with his grades. His parents had begun divorce proceedings.

Joel Hinrichs Jr. said he understood investigators found the message on the computer screen when they arrived at the apartment.

"It was a single line of text on his computer," said the father, who lives in Colorado Springs. "The cursor was still blinking at the end."

The father said he could not recall the exact wording but said his son used profanity in the message and was obviously very angry. "He wrote he was dissatisfied with the situation and was going to quit living," the father said.

His description of the message is consistent with the recollection of others who have been briefed about the investigation by the FBI.

No links to terrorist groups

FBI officials have said they may never know whether the student wanted to get inside the stadium. The student did not have a season ticket.

FBI officials also have said the investigation has not found any links between the student and terrorist organizations.

His father said he thinks his son was just committing suicide and never intended to hurt anyone else.

The father said the FBI on Friday showed him the fractured bench where his son was sitting when the bomb exploded and photos of his son's headless body and a tattered backpack.

The father said when cleaning out the apartment, he learned his son apparently had been having trouble sleeping and had bought Sominex, a sleep aid.

The younger Hinrichs had a long fascination with ammunition and bombs, his relatives and friends said. Inside his bedroom in Norman were several used metal artillery shells -- the largest about 2 feet long. He had belts of used brass shell casings, a box of spent bullets and military ammo containers.

He also had items more typical of many college students -- textbooks, empty liquor bottles, magazines and a martial arts movie videotape.

The father allowed two reporters from The Oklahoman into the bedroom briefly Thursday.

Bomb experts removed explosive-related materials from the apartment Oct. 2. Contributing: Randy Ellis

Apparently not because I don't disagree with your point of view. The only thing I was pointing out was the guy's inability to read what was before him, a problem many FReepers seem to have. As you were posting I was reading another thread where an Airman stabbed three people to death and in the first couple of posts someone notes that they don't say what the guy did. I just find it odd that posts are made when no time is taken to even read or think about what is written

Apparent suicide victim identified

By: North County Times wire services

SAN DIEGO - A man who fatally shot himself in his University City condominium during a standoff with San Diego police was identified Saturday as a 29-year-old student.
An autopsy is scheduled tomorrow on the body of Khaled Yasufi, medical examiner Investigator Sal Rodriguez said.

Police were sent to the 8700 block of Costa Verde Boulevard after someone reported a strong odor coming from a condo about 1 p.m. Friday, SDPD Sgt. Jim Schorr said.

A man in the condo told officers everything was fine and shut the door, Schorr said. Within a couple of minutes, a gunshot was heard, prompting police to clear the building, Schorr said.
Police eventually sent in a camera-equipped robot, which transmitted images of a body in the unit. When officers made entry after a standoff of about six hours, a chemical lab was found in the bathroom of the condo, police said.
Rodriguez said he did not know where Yasufi went to school.

"Nice guys who keep to themselves" should be watched contantly.

Who elected you dictator.

You want to make it a crime to a polite person who has no friends (usually due to situations beyond their control).

(sarcasm)Why don't I just breakout the guns now and go on a rampage, you're going to arrest and imprison anyway if you get what you want.

I think you missed the sarcasm in the post from 50sDad, myself.

I saw no "sarcasm" tag in his post (post 6).

"I saw no "sarcasm" tag in his post (post 6)."

You're correct, there was none. I took it as sarcasm, though, even in the absence of a sarcasm tag.

Or at the screensaver. That would make sure it was on the screen, and would give a nice scrolling effect.

That doesn't give you a blinking cursor. Just checked mine, which reads:

"A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."

In Red Script letters. :)

Also, "there were 50 lit matches around the bench where he blew himself up."

I've wondered about that. Fifty matches is kinda weird. However, it was nighttime, and I wonder if the "matches" were misidentified nails? About the same size and shape, in the dark the heads of the nails could look like match heads. Presumably nails would be coated with explosion by products, and possibly blood.

You are correct. I acknowledged that upthread somewhere. I had thought that blink was available under font properties, but when I looked back at that, it wasn't there.

By the way - your screensaver is missing a couple of commas.

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

The matches were found the next day after the crime scene tape had been removed. No way the FBI would've left matches lying in such close proximity to the bench, IMHO.

You're being slightly melodramatic, don't you think? Not the first time there's been a tiff between posters on FR, won't be the last.

But, nothing here. Did you catch the story in San Diego, where a strong, odd smell was detected OUTSIDE a condo, and when police knocked on the door to investigate, the guy killed himself? Upshot of my mentioning that is, neighbors would have known, not just the roomate, Cheema.

Caught that story. You make a good point, about the neighbors, but guess who the neighbors where? The complex is said to be heavily foreign students, with JH living in the mostly Muslim area.
