JEANINE Pirro's campaign to unseat Sen. Hillary Clinton has stumbled so much that reporters in Albany have come up with a Top 10 list of reasons the telegenic Westchester DA "is running such a bad campaign." Since the state capital is deprived of David Letterman's writers, we'll skip to: "No. 6 — She wants to put Hillary off guard so she can sneak up on her. No. 5 — Her campaign is really a pilot for a Fox sitcom. No. 4 — She's looking for the sympathy vote. No. 3. — She's trying to convince the Patakis to hire her as their maid. No. 2. — They're just incompetent. No. 1 — Mike McKeon." McKeon, a top aide to Gov. Pataki before founding Mercury Public Affairs, is advising Pirro. "My fan club is alive and well," he laughed to us.

Pataki's hands all over this campaign will eventually bring it down. Pataki can not swing her a single conservative Republican primary voter. His hands on this campaign will make it certain that the Conservative Party stays far away from Pirro. And under it all is the still unanswered question: Since Jeannine and Al both signed the same fraudulent tax returns, why didn't she go to prison too?
