New Jersey's largest city is engaging in pay-to-praise journalism.
Newark is paying a newspaper 100-thousand dollars to publish positive stories about the city.
The no-bid contract was awarded to the Newark Weekly News. The city already advertises heavily in the paper.
The newspaper must generate stories based on leads from the city's public information office.
Newspaper owner Howard Scott tells The Star-Ledger of Newark he's providing a service much the same way as other newspapers print legal advertisements for municipalities.

Yeah, how much Dem money flows to the NYT??? I think we would be shocked (or would we?)
Unbelievable. On a related note, I'm curious to see who the Asbury Park Press will endorse for Governor. They reluctantly endorsed W in '04. The Trenton Times has already endorsed Corzine.
>>>> Asbury Park Press will endorse for Governor
I heard on NJ101.5 this morning that the Asbury Park Press endorsed Forrestor for Governor.
Great news. Thanks!
As a NJ resident, I can't help but think that there are going to be a few blank pages in this paper. There isn't much positive to Newark. That's why they need to pay a paper to write good stories. Newark is cesspool of crime, corruption, and welfare-itis. Newark has all the problems of NYC without any of the grace, charm, cultural enlightenment or wealth.
First issue came out. 25 blank pages of good news.
"Today's good news is that Willie Washington, who stabbed 12 bus-riders in the stomach on Friday afternoon, only attacked fat folks, and his short six inch knife didn't penetrate into the vital organs.
All twelve stabbees have medical insurance, so the city will not have to pay to keep them in the hospital.
Tha mayor exclaimed, 'Thank goodness for Willie's short knife. I hope we can have additional good samaritans like Willie, so that bus riding will be less dangerous"
Is Liberty State Park in Newark? My one positive Newark experience is docking my boat at that Marina one fall weekend when it was mostly empty and watching the NYC skyline. There was a lovely Italian restuarant nearby, the owner picked us up from the Marina and brought us to the restaurant and back.
The best thing coming out of Newark is I-95, North or South!!
I wonder how much the archdiocese of Newark is making by the state purchasing the property the diocese owns which will be used to make the new sports arena? a pork-barrel project the state and taxpayers do NOT need. Seems we haven't heard one bad word from the bishops over the voting and public funding of the stem cell institute or about the many state and federal pro abortion catholic politicians. could money be a factor? taxpayer money? taxpayer money used to purchase property, used to pay rent for closed catholic schools which are now being used by public schools?
No, that's Jersey City. Not far, but not the same place.
Liberty State park's address is Jersey City.
Now now Coleus. Newark as the best damn garbage trucks tax payer monies can buy.
I know you are jealous :P
and I bet they're fumigated and gold plated, only the best to buy votes for democrats, with the whole state's money.
$100,000? The old joke: We've established that you're a prostitute, now we're just haggling about the price.

1. Still lots of great restaurants along Ferry Street.
2. You can usually walk in Branch Brook or Independence Park without being mugged.
3. Newark Museam still has the best depiction of the Brooklyn Bridge (by Joseph Stella), the only Tibetan altar consecrated by the Dalai Lama, and it is FREE to visit.
4. Dicky Dee's on Bloomfield Avenue for an Italian Hot Dog.
5. Sacred Heart Cathedral is still in one piece.
6. They finally took the tacky aluminum siding off of my dad's boyhood home.
