A clothes call for NBA whiners
The Washington Times ^ | 10-26-05 | Clarence Page

You can't say that National Basketball Association Commissioner David Stern does not enjoy a challenge. Players will have to observe a dress code beginning this season, he has announced. The idea is going over big with the players -- like flood insurance in the Sahara. The code, delivered in a short memo last week, boils down to this: No bling. "Bling," for those of you who are not fortunate enough to have a teenager in your home, is short for "bling bling," a hip-hop term for gaudy jewelry and other forms of showy, ostentatious style. In 2002, "bling bling" joined "jiggy," "dope" and "phat" in the Oxford English Dictionary as synonyms for what my generation called hip, a milestone that pretty much declares each of these terms to be unhip now.

It's interesting to see who's in favor of this. Even Spike Lee supports it.

The ones that will yell the loudest are a bunch of young, stupid, uneducated, millionaires.

Most of them probably never heard of the term "dress code".

Most of these guys are young and they dont know what to do with their money except purchase "bling bling" Incidentally the Lakers were using "bling bling" as a playoff catch phrase a couple years ago. Anyways, many of them have also never actually had a real job working in a professional environment. I think the dress code is a good idea, if not a necessity. They are role models models for lots of little boys [and girls] who may never play in the NBA but chances are they will work in some kind of professional environment. These guys are role models whether they want to be or not and I think that professional dress is something they need to portray to their avid fans and mentees.

Several teams, with black coaches already had a dress code that is far stricter than the NBA code just instituted. The Knicks have a particularly strict dress code from what I understand.

Why were theirs and other teams policies not called racist?

Don't worry! They'll still be able to carry their bongs and 9 mm. The NBA didn't ban those.

I ran into Isaiah Thomas (figuratively, not literally) in a hallway in a Manhattan office building a few weeks ago. That guy dresses like a million bucks -- and could do high-end men's clothing ads if he wanted to.

Even John Thompson of Georgetown University basketball fame came out verbally in support of the new clothes policy.
