I am inclined to say that she's only embarassing herself further, but apparently she's immune from embarassment. 'Rats obviously lack an embarrassment gene ... it just doesn't exist in their make-up ... I cite the Clinton's as a classic example.

Excellent point, IMO.
Your point underlines what this story is really about: the MSM is furious that their monopoly on the news has been broken.
They thought they owned an exclusive right to manipulate elections, and can't stand it that the right has weapons to fight back against their lies.

"I must answer the bloggers, the babblers and blabbers, and the true believers who have called me everything from 'feminazi' to an 'elitist liberal' to an 'idiot.' If I was an idiot, it was for believing in a free press that is able to do its job without fear or favor."
First ridicule members of a truly free press. Then hide behind a mythical 'free press that never gets questioned' right.

She writes that what she didn't know at the time was that the attack on the "60 Minutes" piece was just part of the Bushites "sliming" of those who raised questions about the president.
I didn't really think of it as an attack at the time. It was such a blatant forgery that we were just having fun with it. Like the Microsoft Talking Paper Clip (Clippy) saying I see you're trying to forge a military document... you might like to (1) use a font consistent with the time period of the document you are attempting to forge... (2)... That was a funny one! Who thought of that one?

"I suppose we are McCarthyists for insisting that slanderous attacks on the President be based on the truth. If so, we are guilty."
You need to re-read her opening remarks. She has a right to free press, and somehow we, er, violated her rights through exercizing our rights. So, it's all perfectly logical-- if you're a leftist.

"If I was an idiot, it was for believing in a free press that is able to do its job without fear or favor." Mary, permit me to edit your comment to make it accurate:
"If I was an idiot, it was for believing a liberal press could peddle forgeries without fear of detection."

I suppose the logic goes, the first Amendment only protects the Press. Peons are not allowed to talk.

Excellent point! Many people are just having a lot of fun with their double standards, their insanity, etc. Why watch sitcoms? We have the left to laugh at. And lo and behold, someone decides to dig deep, maybe echo things others have said [subconsciously or otherwise] and then kaboom!

The December article, not yet generally available, is an excerpt from Mapes' soon-to-be-publihsed book, "Truth and Duty" (St. Martin's) on her career and the episode often called Rathergate. Vanity Fair says Mapes sets out to "answer her critics." Just wondering if anyone at FR was contacted by Vanity Fair to dispute her side or is this just another one-sided media hit-piece? (I know, rhetorical question.)

Heheh! It might have worked 15 years ago. Makes a fella wonder what all they got away with back then.
