Reid calls president latter-day Fillmore

By Stephen Dinan
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Published November 1, 2005

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said yesterday that President Bush will go down as the Millard Fillmore of our time, and said the Republican president is the best thing Democrats have going for them for the 2006 elections.

"I think our biggest cheerleader for getting back some of the votes we've lost in the last couple presidential elections and some congressional elections is George W. Bush," the Nevada Democrat said in predicting a big election year for his party.

He said Republicans will be doomed by the indictments that have hit the White House and House Republican leaders, an investigation into stock sales by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, big budget deficits and lack of progress on pensions and health care.

Mr. Reid has changed his mind from May, when he said on the floor of the Senate that it would take "a miracle" to win five seats -- the number necessary to gain parity with Republicans in the Senate.

"Frankly, at that time we weren't doing nearly as well then as we are now," Mr. Reid told reporters yesterday at a lunch organized by the Christian Science Monitor. Now, however, he said he "wouldn't be betting a lot on Republicans controlling the next Congress."

"We're going to pick up seats. History's on our side. It's just a question of how many we pick up," he said.

He said Democrats will defeat four incumbent Republicans -- in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Montana and Missouri. He also said Democrats have

I doubt that Harry knows who Millard Fillmore was. I'm guessing that Biden fed him that line.

Hey just got a new hard drive at Office Max for $70 and a $30 rebate. Maybe Dingy Harry can afford that since he voted in a new raise in June.

Say what??!!

Millard Fillmore is the best he can do? I'd love to see a Jay Leno man on the street interview to see how many people have ever heard that name.

The Republicans could spend billions, and never come up with advertizing this good...

Oh yeah, this will resonate with a populace where 85 percent of the people couldn't tell you who the current vice president is...

'05 Proving To Be Worst Newspaper Year Since Recession by Ross Fadner, Monday, Oct 31, 2005 7:00 AM EST

IT'S OFFICIAL: 2005 WILL BE the newspaper industry's worst year since the last ad industry recession. And things aren't looking much better for next year either, according to a top Wall Street firm's report on newspaper publishing. "Sadly, 2005 is shaping up as the industry's worst year from a revenue growth perspective since the recession impacted 2001-2002 period," says the report from Goldman Sachs, adding a warning that meaningful growth in 2006 is "very unlikely."

In particular, national advertising has under-performed, remaining essentially flat this year, as has the retail category, the report said--while classified, both print and online, has shown positive gains so far this year, up 4-5 percent.

The weak ad environment for newspapers has caused Goldman to scale back its 2006 growth forecast to 3.5 percent from 4.0 percent. The note said national ad growth would once again be weakest at 1.0 percent, followed by retail, 2.5 percent, and classifieds at 3.6 percent. The bright spot continues to be online newspaper revenues, which are projected to grow an impressive 25 percent in 2006. Despite this, online will still represent 5.0 percent of total newspaper revenues.

The only really good news for publishers is that the investment firm believes the cost of newsprint, which has risen recently, is likely to fall slightly in 2006, as demand falls more quickly than production capacity. The report said newsprint prices would peak and then slowly recede in the second half of the year.

Even so, this good news is scant relief for an industry besieged by flat ad revenues, falling stocks, and fleeing subscribers. Last week, Rishad Tobaccowala, chief innovation officer for Publicis Groupe, told a newspaper--the Chicago Tribune--"newspapers are at a tipping point," in which online media will start to take more readership and more ad dollars. He added that newspapers are in the worst situation of all news media for growth as "the least visually engaging and least youth oriented" medium.

"I think our biggest cheerleader for getting back some of the votes we've lost in the last couple presidential elections and some congressional elections is George W. Bush,"

The way for the GOP to continue to win big is to make sure the Dims continue to run against a guy who's not on the ballot....

Nancy Pelosi also predicted that they would "take back the House" in 2004. Unfortunately, all these pesky voters didn't agree.

Everytime I hear these a-holes, they're talking about taking back the country...taking back the WH...in our structure of government, "power" is not theirs to take. It is granted "by the people", originated "of the people", and instituted "for the people".

The Dims had best learn this before they really lose (i.e. 'buster-proof majorities in Congress, and 5 or more solid conservatives on SCOTUS).

Golly, I thought this was by Scrappleface when I first skimmed through the body of the post.

W as the Rats biggest cheerleader?

W as the reason they will get back votes the Rats lost last time? Didn't they try "W" as the reason to vote for them last time--uh, when they LOST all those votes because of W?

YOu can't make this stuff up.

Republicans now control the presidency and both houses of congress. Democrats can no longer win at the ballot box so their last chance to impose liberalism on the country is through the courts with their liberal activist judges. They realize that when Alito is confirmed that their stranglehold on the courts has now been broken also. They now control NOTHING. Fifty years of liberal tyrany is over.
