Students Wear KKK Outfits At Halloween Dance, Community Concerned
Channel Cincinnati ^ | Today | Deborah Haas, Mark Sickmiller

Posted on 11/08/2005 12:58:38 PM PST by day10

A dozen Tri-state high school students made quite a scene at the school halloween dance when they put on Ku Klux Klan outfits.

Students and administrators in Rising Sun, Indiana, say they're upset it happened and shocked the students would do it.

The principal made the students take off the outfits right away, but the damage was done.

9News learned the students were told they have to go through sensitivity training or risk suspension.

People in the community are also being asked to reach out to each other.

"I think you're surprised if one person shows up [in KKK garb], but sometimes good people, whether they're adults or kids, do things that aren't the best and make bad decisions and that's what we had. We had about 12 individuals make a very bad decision," said Superintendent Steve Patz.

The superintendent says neither he, nor any administrators, heard rumblings this might happen.

The students, all boys, came to the dance wearing sheets, dressed as ghosts and pulled out hoods a little later.

Students didn't want to talk on camera, but said they were surprised -- even offended.

The students involved will do civil rights research and write papers and the staff will work to improve the way the school teaches issues of tolerance and sensitivity.

The superintendent knows that everyone knows what happened in the small town and everyone knows who's involved. That's why he wants the community to help with the solution.

"I think it gets back to the education we need to do not only as a school but as a community about why these things are unacceptable," said Patz.

Church leaders are being asked to use their influence.

"As a pastor, I care about all the people in this community, regardless of race, and we want to be able to reach out to bring some understanding of what happened and probably some education needs to take place," said Dan Hunt of Bethel Unity Baptist Church.

There was one African-American girl at the dance, 9News learned.

Although the superintendent says he's under the impression the act wasn't done maliciously, it doesn't matter.

He says this kind of action regarding race, religion, cultures -- just can't happen.

Thanks.

We had a group of real, not dress up, KKKlowns give a little demonstration in my town about 10 years ago. They were stationed outside of a cafe near an intersection and we caught a red light there.

My wife couldn't resist. She rolled down her window and started shouting at them. I wanted to just ignore them, but she would have none of it. She said they were all on the way to Hell and that God created all people in His image. To that, one of the Klowns said something snotty to her, which got me riled up and I rolled down my window to yell something when the cars behind me started honking because we were holding up traffic. I gave them a "salute," and drove off.

That's my only encounter with the KKK.

No.

Not by any definition.

And if you don't know, then please don't imply it.

Oh they're just good little democrats celebrating the roots of the democrat party. After all, the KKK was founded by democrats. Truman was in the kkk. Byrd was in the kkk. The democrat tradition continues.

Can anyone spot the irony in this statement ?

Let's put this in perspective. It's OK for a child to wear the costume of an axe murderer or a demonically screeching witch, but not a demonically demented KKK person?

When Christians complain about Halloween celebrations, we are told that Halloween is just a fun holiday for kids, and the costumes are just for fun, not to be taken literally. But now it's no longer just good old fashioned fun, now that some kids want to have some fun in sheets and hoods. (I'm not stating a position WRT to whether they SHOULD be having fun in sheets and hoods, mind you.)

You're totally right. Anyone who talks race ahead of facts and issues should be banned from having children. The people who always bring up race are the racists and those people are liberals. They're the ones always tossing race around. They're the racists.

You learn a lot. And believe me, these people aren't exactly afraid of airing ALL of their dirty laundry....

Just wait to see if Condi Rice gets a Presidential or VP nod in 2008. I expect that it will be an interesting time.

I don't see Condi getting the nod in 08. But if she did, I agree you would see all kinds of people coming out of the woodwork.

that is why I said if.

I doubt she will even in the race honestly.

I don't think SHE wants it, as much as everyone around her does.

I would crawl through a mile of broken glass to vote for Condi. She has what it takes to be a superb VP and, if the times comes, president.

Those "coming out of the woodwork" would be the Dems who would throw every nasty thing they could at her. They would go berserk.

She is conservative enough for you?

Yes the rats would get nasty. We all know how much support they showed for Lieberman. But lets not kid ourself here, they wouldn't be the only ones showing what kind of people they really are.
