I am sorry I don't have the original article, but it has been removed from the WFTV web site. They did a big expose this week on the proliferation of concealed carry permit holders in Central Florda. On their web site they had links to excel files containing lists of permit holders by county including names, addresses, birth dates and permit numbers. Of course, that is all a matter of public record, but they made it easy to access and, from what I have been told by those who heard their promos on the TV and radio, they told people to go to their web site to find out which of their neighbors might be carrying. Here is the e-mail I sent to the station:
I would like to know for what purpose your station put links to the CCW permit lists on your website. Were you interested in letting criminals know where they could go to steal guns?
I hope you will be as quick to expose criminals' names and addresses as you are to "out" those law-abiding citizens who just want to be able to protect themselves legally.
And here is the reply I received:
Ms. Aberaussie, thank you for taking the time to share your opinion with us. We take your concerns very seriously, and we understand that you strongly disagree with the station's decision to publish state records identifying concealed weapon permit holders in Central Florida.
While we very much respect your viewpoint, we believe that our story regarding concealed weapon permits, as well as the identities of those who have elected to obtain those permits, is newsworthy and of legitimate concern to the public. The Florida legislature has deemed that the identity of permit holders, including their names, addresses, dates of birth and permit numbers, is public information. While the legislature has determined that law abiding citizens have the right to carry a concealed weapon, it also has determined that their fellow citizens have a right to know who has been granted such a permit.
However, to the extent that you have any continuing concerns about the publication on the station's website of the state's list of permit holders, you should be reassured by the fact that this information is no longer available on the website as a result of the station's normal process of removing dated materials. We hope this will ease any concerns you may have.
Again, we thank you for taking the time to contact us. Please know that we hear you, and we understand your concerns. Hopefully, we can move forward from here with mutual respect and a better understanding of each other's viewpoint on this matter.

Now, I have trouble believing that they removed the links as part of their regular updating process. I checked the site several times during the day on Tuesday, and about mid-afternoon the links to the lists disappeared, but the article was still there. I do know that one person I know who was calling WFTV and Tallahasee regarding the article and the links was told that both the station and the Department of Licensing were flooded with calls.
i believe it is public info in ohio too.
i tried to convince my wife she should get her license, even if just to get her name on the list. kind of a "don't mess with me" list.
i agree that it is 'not right' that ccw holders have to be on a public list... but it think it is not right in that it is just plain silly.
I'm not going to say what I think about this, but suffice it to say that if the left wants to play this type of game, the day may just be coming when they find out that others might be willing to up the anti as well.
Placing my name and address and private information in a public place so any person can target me, is a very hostile act.
That may have been their intent, but in reality, it will probably just give the criminals a list of houses to avoid (as well as a list of good targets).
Ah yes, the lib 1st amendment crowd screws the 2cnd amendment crowd. What a bunch a ^*^$#(( s.
I HOPE some thug comes around to try to steal my guns.
Make my DAY, punk!
But in actuality, here in Fl, we do have some of the best CCW laws going and the no-retreat law going into effect has made us a punching bag of the lunies.
Find out where that B lives. Then create a sign that is about 10' by 10' that provides her name, here address and her phone number. Then make sure you place in great big letters, that she DOES NOT have a gun.
Do it to ever member of the staff there at the nation.
See how they like it.
If your name is in the phone book, she and the station just made it possible for people to phone and harrass you. Time for some equal time...
In Montana you can just look in the phonebook. Anyone in the phonebook probably has a gun. Anyone not in the phonebook, too, for that matter.
That's what blogs and Free Republic are for!
Perhaps the Texas Freepers can tell me if I'm wrong on this, but isn't this exactly why Texas quit allowing this info out to the public? I could swear if was because of the reason listed above, too (increased burglaries at those residences).
"In Montana you can just look in the phonebook. Anyone in the phonebook probably has a gun. Anyone not in the phonebook, too, for that matter."
They say universal gun ownership makes for a civil society.
That was exactly what I was thinking!
Better yet, let's blast it over talk shows, put it on blogs, and list it right here on FR.
Anyone want to bet me they'd try to sue us?
Public info yes, but the radical left reason for doing this is this TV station hates freedom, hates conservatism, hates gun ownership, is pro-gay, pro-Marxist and anti-American.
Boycott the sponsors of this rag. Tell the sponsors why. I live in an Orlando suburb. This station is anti-American.
It's very peaceable up here!
I think a list of women who murdered their children might be more useful as a public service.
So, in the interest of "Public Info", I suggest we start a thread whereby we get every person's name who works at WFTV, and publish EVERYTHING "Public" about them...who they donate to, what clubs/orgs they belong to, what books/videos they may rent/own...ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, nothing left out...
That includes ANY allegations that have been made against them, and maybe an interpid FReeper or 2 could do some "on the ground" research, as in follow them and track their EVERY move, as long as it's for the good of the public, and cannot be called "stalking"...unless we can say that WFTV is "stalking" CCW holders?
Who knows...we may find out some nice salacious "public dirt" on them...let them squirm under the scope (nice pun) for a while!
