CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) -- For the second year in a row, this destitute city has been named the nation's most dangerous, according to a company's annual ranking based on crime statistics.
Last year, the distinction seemed to hurt city boosters' feelings more than it harmed revitalization efforts. This time, city leaders are offended by the ranking, calling it unfair.
"We're doing so many nice things now. It's unfortunate that somebody always wants to bad-mouth Camden," Mayor Gwendolyn Faison said.
The city took the top spot last year from Detroit, which remained No. 2 in the most dangerous city rankings, to be released Monday by Morgan Quitno Press. The Lawrence, Kan.-based company publishes "City Crime Rankings," an annual reference book.
Camden, a former industrial city across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, is known for a history of corrupt politicians, drug-dealing and murders. It has been among the top 10 in the most dangerous city rankings in each of the eight years Morgan Quitno released them. By most measures, it is also among the nation's poorest

I prefer "New Jersey is Forever."
A sink hole and been a sink hole since the 1940s, insofar as I understand. But they gave Candem the Battleship NJ and not Bayonne, so the heck with 'em I say.
I say we give Camden to Pennsylvania.
In Camden, a Mayor doesn't make their bones until they draw 10-long from the state.
Now, Amish, I grew up 25 miles from the Eastside. The city has provided for several friends of mine to be able to retire at age 50 without ever having to venture out on patrol to rural St. Clair or Madison counties.
Sometimes, on Friday and Saturday nights, Highway 15 southbound looked like an ISP parade route.
You've got that backwards. If we give Philadelphia to NJ, that will improve both states.
Some residents say their neighborhoods feel a bit safer. "I haven't heard that many gunshots," said Gracy Muniz, 22, a mother of three who lives in North Camden.
St. Louis!
WHOO-HOO! WE'RE NUMBER ONE! WE'RE NUMBER ONE!
IN YOUR FACE, FLINT!
Woo Hoo... add this to the STD stats and we are notorious.
Kudos St Louis.
Hey Detroit, you got some catchin up to do at #9. All you Detroit Freepers need to get out and commit a violent crime before the first of the year. You're slippin.
I wonder if that is where they hide the bodies....?

Here's an example why. St. Louis is the most dangerous city for its size (100,000-499,999). But it is not among the 25 most dangerous as a metro area. Since the 1950s, St. Louis City has lost about two-thirds of its population, while the population has increased dramatically in the suburbs, where now the majority of the metro lives. (Even as far as the city is concerned, 90% of the crime is concentrated in 45% of the city, and so many of the neighborhoods are quite safe.)

Is Manhattan now safe for crackers above 125th on the West Side or 96th on the east?
What about parts of South Bronx or Brooklyn?
I spent 8 years there and it was as dangerous in parts of the city as it was in East St Louis or Memphis or NOLA or Miami.
I bet the marginal areas have improved and the goblins don't wild as much in the gentry areas but the hardcore places are still not great.
Camden is the city of children having children. Most of the crimes are young drug dealers against young dealers or committed by children under the the age of twenty one . It always amazes me when the parents cry saying their child was a good child and they got shot on a drug corner. I am not sure of current statistics but at one point the majority of the city of Camden was under the age of 21. A recipe for disaster. On a good note they have cleaned the business district up a fair deal, on the other hand the busiest place there is the welfare assistance office and the courts.
To all those people that think religion and family values are for the extreme whack jobs.. Camden is the place for you!
Camden is a war zone.
"Actually, as a state, New Jersey does not appear in the top third of the list of the Most Dangerous States:"
As a state, New Jersey is an extremely affluent place, something a lot of people don't realize. It is really quite beautiful, overall.
"I say we give Camden to Pennsylvania"
NO WAY!
We already got Philly!
"my favorite quote from the article:"
LOL!
It's the one you don't hear, I guess, that you have to worry about. (Bullets travel faster than sound, don't they?)
