Al Franken Schooled by Antonin Scalia at New York Event
The National Ledger ^ | 11-23-05 | CK Rairden

Al Franken stepped out of his comfortable echo-chamber of Air America on Monday night and was given more than one lesson by Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. The C-List political commentator attempted to rip off a sophomoric shot at Justice Scalia, but was quickly embarrassed, according to a report in the NY Post.

Franken, apparently unaware of exactly how far he was stepping up in class, was chided "as if he were a delinquent schoolboy at Time Warner Center on Monday night.

Al Franken vs. Antonin Scalia....

Sort of like putting a .22 pistol up against a Cruise Missile.

Franken merely thinks he is a wit, what he is in reality is a half wit.

Franken stood up in the back row and started talking about "judicial demeanor" ... First, Scalia lectured Franken, "Demeanor is the wrong word. You mean ethics."

Perhaps Franken should make his case on Larry King Alive, just not on Wednesday night. As King explained earlier, Wednesday night's special guest will be Supreme Court Justice Stephen Burger. After the break he corrected himself. Maybe they should re-run the Wallace interview.

Not half a wit, therefore, a twit.

You're being generous, FRiend. I thought it was more of a spitball vs. a Neutron Bomb. I don't think Herr Franken knew what hit him.

I would substitute the world "half" with the derogatory slang of 'copulation'.

Stuart Smalley would like to think that he got under the Justice Scalia's skin, "and that's...ok", because it's one of a colossus of reasons why he and his side won't be seeing a return to the majority in any of our three branches anytime soon too.

99.99% of the entire U.S. population would be crazy to match wits with Scalia.

Al Franken probably falls within the top 25%. He didn't stand a chance.

I think you rate him too highly.

Franken is a comedian posing as a commentator.  He's very good at mocking the mockable, which is just about everything, but taking on someone like Scalia without heavy prep work or perhaps certain and steady sobriety is simply stupid.

One of Harry Blackmun's clerks described Scalia's stature in the war between liberal and conservative Justices:

The glaring contrast between the liberal and conservative Justices was reflected in almost every aspect of Court life and was on public display during every oral argument.  I came to dread these session, where, from the cheap seats at the side of the courtroom, the liberal clerks would watch demoralized as the conservatives thoroughly dominated the proceedings.  There was Scalia, ever witty, brilliant, and self-satisfied, leaning forward into his microphone to make mincemeat of those advocates with whom he disagreed or coming to the rescue of friendly counsel.  . . .

-- Edward Lazarus, Closed Chambers:  The Rise, Fall, and Future of the Modern Supreme Court (personal copy)

Poor Al was . . . clueless . . . or maybe puffed up with Dutch courage.

The 76th percentile isn't very high at all. Just high enough to memorize his lines.

BTW, I don't believe that all liberals are necessarily stupid, just borderline psychotic.
