If she takes you up on your offer let me know. Could get very interesting and I'd love to follow.

(I don't think she will.)

...very interesting words by Thomas Jefferson in your comment #59! Thanks!

Here's some background information on an exchange between George Washington and "the Jews of Newport, Rhode Island."

“To Bigotry No Sanction,
to Persecution No Assistance”
George Washington's Letter to the
Jews of Newport, Rhode Island
(1790)

Jewish Virtual Library

Here's the transcript of one of his letters to them:

To the HEBREW CONGREGATIONS IN THE CITIES OF PHILADELPHIA, NEW YORK, CHARLESTON, AND RICHMOND.

Gentlemen:-The liberality of sentiment toward each other, which marks every political and religious denomination of men in this country, stands unparalleled in the history of nations.

The affection of such a people is a treasure beyond the reach of calculation, and the repeated proofs which my fellow-citizens have given of their attachment to me and approbation of my doings form the purest source of my temporal felicity.

The affectionate expressions of your address again excite my gratitude and receive my warmest acknowledgment.

The power and goodness of the Almighty, so strongly manifested in the events of our late glorious revolution, and His kind interposition in our behalf, have been no less visible in the establishment of our present equal government. In war He directed the sword, and in peace He has ruled in our councils. My agency in both has been guided by the best intentions and a sense of duty I owe to my country.

And as my exertions have hitherto been amply rewarded by the approbation of my fellow citizens, I shall endeavor to deserve a continuance of it by my future conduct.

May the same temporal and eternal blessings which you implore for me, rest upon your congregations.

                  G. Washington.

The rest of the exchange is behind the following link. ...beautiful read.

Just bookmarked the Jewish Virtual Library.

Here's another statement by Jefferson I like:

"Reading, reflection and time have convinced me that the interests
of society require the observation of those moral precepts ... in
which all religions agree." --Thomas Jefferson

Thanks again. Leaders in various religions should consider what they can agree on. Some are afraid of being replaced and/or wiped out, and others are afraid of letting their adherents see certain events and figures in history. Between Christianity and Judaism, for example, both believe in prayer for repentance (instead of literal, exact perfection--no kidding). Orthodox Jews also have the belief that people outside of their religion will have a place in "the world to come."

It would also be interesting to find out what leading Hindus and Sikhs think about such things.

BTW, on the possibility of a secular influence on the issue in the post and thread above, see the following fresh post.

India and Indonesia in strategic pact as China looms
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1528159/posts

There are several governments that don't want our USA to get with India on defense. At least two of those governments actually pay people to post propaganda on Web. And some of the leaders in churches of each of those two countries have been negotiating some sort of church merger for several years.

Hmm, I'll check your link.

Regarding Sikhs, I really don't know much about them, other than a couple of Sikhs I've met, who seemed extremely tolerant of other religions.

Hindus - well, Hindus are an interesting lot, because there are so many different places on the path, so to speak. I could write an essay but don't have time.

I am familiar with one Hindu teacher who wrote: "We should worship Jesus and Krishna together!"

Having studied the Bhagavad Gita and other Vedic scriptures, I'd say that the essence of both is love for God, and love for others. Details may vary, but the essence is the same.

There is nothing to prove. For you even minor fisticuffs involving Pastors constitutes religious persecution. If there is something you want to believe you would believe it anyway regardless of facts.

[And while you are there, figure out an answer to why you think a pro-UNITED STATES-OF-AMERICA, THE GREATEST NATION THERE HAS EVER BEEN OR EVER WILL BE, site should be even used by those who patently seek only to express their hatred for America, for the West, for Judeo-Christian/Western/Human Civilization in general and for Christians in particular and to divide and disrupt US and to create dissent among US -- let alone that we should actually enjoy your doing so?]

People like you are desperately in need of enlightenment especially from those who come from the land of knowlege. And your enjoyment of course ( you probably haven't realised yet) comes out of gaining more knowlege everyday. I am here for you to help you free your shackles of bigotry and remove your blinkers of secterianism so that you may be able to see the rest of this beautiful world without being handicapped by prejudice ;o

UNITED STATES-OF-AMERICA, THE GREATEST NATION THERE HAS EVER BEEN OR EVER WILL BE,

And always remember, you owe your very existance to India. Without us you wont have even come into existance. Had there not been somebody wanting to find OUR GREATEST NATION EVER, nobody would have stumbled upon you.

And now on a more serious note:

Telling us that a number of folks from Group A was prevented from exterminating a number of folks from Group B is not "anti-Group A."

It's not even "pro-Group B."

It's just telling us that a number of folks from Group A was prevented from exterminating a number of folks from Group B.

True..........the only question is whether such a thing has happened at all. Frankly I have a hard time beliving any of this highly exaggerated piece of tripe. Especially those from sources which are hard on their religious aganda...............[ and more so if they happen to be Christian] ;o
Of course India and Hinduism happen to be their favourite target,  Muslims are just too strong, violent and very well organised. Hindus are easier to take on. Whats both Christianity and Islam both fail to realise that Hinduism [the world's greatest and most advanced religion, that combined philosophy, metaphysics, culture, spritualism, science and most importantly love and tolerance like no other religion and that which existed when most other people around the world lived in caves] has survived and far longer than any religions that exists today and no matter how much you (and the Muslims) try to stamp out Hinduism from this planet, Hinduism will still outlive both Christianity and Islam.

"Now, to assist your redemption, go check out post #11, Dear G-K - and then go to your room! "

As much as you and your cohorts would love to insult Hindus, let me tell you, I dont get offended by such tacky demonstrations of extreme stupidity.

...And I also eat beef.

And now time for you old man, to take a leak (somewhere other than FR) and get back to your bed.

<< Hinduism will still outlive ... Christianity ... >>

First of all there is no competition and your drawing comparisons between Hindu Teaching and the Christian Faith is a bit like comparing the horse to the aeroplane.

There'll always be a a buggy or a cart and a set of reins in a museum somewhere and aeroplanes, like Christianity, will continue to soar to ever greater heights.

And nor is islam a religion. It's a death cult.

As for whether or not we will take it on, I suggest you switch on your Panasonic and see if you can pull Fox News off the satellite with the free feed the stolen-satellite-dish wallah rigged up for you the other week and see how many bloody islamists we've taken on lately and, except as FRiends, how few Hindus.

You silly old dickhead.

Blessings - Brian

[PS: Thanks for the tip about taking a leak BEFORE I get back in bed. Great improvement on the previous arrangement]

Well great, but what about the next plot, and the next plot, and the next plot... seems like this stuff to illiterate Hindus is the equivalent of nectar to killer bees... seems they could use some private guards.

Aeroplanes crashes buggies dont. Aeroplanes kills more people each year than buggies ever did, but thats besides the point.

A more apt comparison (than your horse an aeroplane theory) between Hinduism and Christianity (if there can ever be a comparison) would be like comparing classical music to pop music. Classical music (Cough* Hinduism Cough*) is timeless, universal, one of the most melodious and an art well perfected over centuries.

Pop music (Cough* Christianity Cough*) sells world wide like hot cakes but hardly lasts for a season. It isnt always bad but some of the singers have just no idea about music.

If the two can be mixed we can create a wonderful "Fusion Music" but more often pop music is too loud and tends to lose the harmony needed ;o

If you want to write to the Indonesian Sunday School Ladies - it needs to go to their local church ( I think they charge them for letter delivery). I'm in work right now - but when I get home I will find the details and post them to you.

Oh dear - it was something I heard, or read, evidently got it wrong. Next time I will check it out before posting. I suspect it was a state in which there is a Baptist majority as per post to me above. But hey, warm regards!

Police in northern India thwarted a plot by Hindu extremists who threatened to burn to death more than 60 Christian converts if they refused to return to Hinduism by Sunday.

Doesn't sound to very friendly to me.

There are three principal strains of Christian faith in America: mainline Protestantism, which can run from Barthian neo-orthodoxy to Marxist liberation theology; Roman Catholicism, which has factions ranging from extreme liberalism to radical traditionalists who believe the Papacy has been held by usurpers since 1958; and evangelicalism, with its own subgroups like charismatics and fundamentalists and longstanding disputes over issues like free will and the end times.

Anti-Israeli sentiment can be found mostly in the mainline group, notably the Presbyterian Church, USA, which has been the most active in promoting divestiture from Israel. Their objections are of a leftist character and are thus more in accord with those of socialist and Communist enemies of Israel. Liberal Protestants deny the substitutionary atonement and even the divinity of Jesus Christ, not to mention other orthodox Christian doctrines. As such, they believe that Jews or other non-Christians would be not denied heaven (if the liberal Protestant believes in its existence). Furthermore, they not hold to any theories of white supremacy, generally regarding them as far more abhorrent than Communism. As such, their grounds for opposing Israel have nothing in common with the Christian Identity believers.

The Christian Identity movement adheres to several doctrines, such as the "dual seed" of Adam and the black race being accursed due to their descent from Ham, that were never held by Reformation or patristic theologians. As such, it is at best heretical. Furthermore, they have absorbed the corrupted Darwinism of white supremacist authors like Arthur de Gobineau, Houston Stewart Chamberlain, and Madison Grant, that holds to the superiority of the white race, especially Nordics, to the remainder of mankind. As such, they have more in common with Hitler and his ilk than with Paul, Augustine, or Calvin.

My argument is that Christianity needs to clean its own house and get with "us" in the war against radical, Islamist terrorism (even against terrorism in Israel) instead of pecking on Hindus.

The fact is that evangelical Christians have been the strongest supporters for the War on Terror in the overall American population. Evangelicals, especially Southerners, serve in the U.S. military in numbers greater than their portion of the population. The principal leaders of the Christian Right, men like LaHaye, Robertson, Falwell, Dobson, and Kennedy, have been strong supporters of Israel. Furthermore, neither Dobson nor Kennedy are dispensationalists, coming from Holiness and Reformed backgrounds, respectively.
