NEW YORK, Nov. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Maj. Ladda (Tammy) Duckworth, an Iraqi war veteran who lost her legs when a rocket-propelled grenade struck her Black Hawk helicopter, invited Rahm Emanuel, the Democrats' master strategist in the House of Representatives, to Walter Reed Army Medical Center one day to meet some recovering vets from their home state of Illinois. "We were walking down the hall and you could see the incredible response to her and her leadership," Emanuel told Newsweek. "She goes to see other troops to keep their spirits up."
Last week Duckworth returned home to Chicago's affluent suburbs to begin what looked like an unofficial campaign for the open congressional seat now held by retiring Republican Rep. Henry Hyde. Still on active duty, Duckworth cannot declare her candidacy or talk politics to the media. But according to Democratic leaders, she's their preferred candidate, according to a report in the current issue of Newsweek.
Duckworth is part of a new breed of macho Democrats, joining eight Iraq veterans who have already announced themselves as candidates in next year's congressional elections. (The party is also reaching out to veterans of wars in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Vietnam, as well as former CIA officers and FBI agents). These Democrats don't offer a unified strategy on how to leave Iraq. But they represent the most visible sign of the sea change in politics over the past year, report Senior White House Correspondent Richard Wolffe and Washington Correspondent Jonathan Darman in the December 5 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, November 28). Recent polls show Democrats running neck and neck with Republicans on terrorism and comfortably ahead on Iraq.

Reaching out to veterans huh? Well, you could not touch me with a 100 foot socialist pole you liberal bast*R*s!
The Dems tried this before and it didn't work
That said, this is Henry Hyde's district and what are her positions going to be. JMO, her opponent should salute her service but focus on issues as abortion, gay mariiage, and taxes.
Always looking for the "gimmick", the "how can we fool 'em today" strategy.
In a demographic as large as our veterans - God Bless 'em - I'm sure they can find a couple dozen apostates to run for office.
Well .. their experiment didn't work too well in OH. Wasn't the lady from OH (who stood up in the House and made the statement "cowards cut and run, Marines never do") the lady who just won an election over a DEMOCRAT former military guy ..??
People are smarter than the democrats give them credit. The guy may have worn a uniform, but that doesn't mean that he supports AMERICA! And .. people didn't fall for phoney military guy John Kerry either.
ping
Leave it to democrats to put up a woman when they're looking for "macho."
These veterans who survived the conflict will now abandon their brethren and the cause they fought for for political gain? They sound like typical self-serving, power-hungry Democrat wannabes and traitors.
Maybe, but not by much. There is no greater moron than the legendary "swing voter", who keeps his thumb in the wind just long enough so that he may cast his vote with an arsenal of misinformed opinion.
We'll see if it works. I know that Hyde's seat was a safe GOP spot, I wasn't aware that it was in play just because he was retiring. But hey, if Phil Crane can get knocked off then I suppose the Democrats can make a play for the Illinois 6th with the right candidate.
The 'RATS have been exploiting the hell out of the fallen soldiers so I guess it only makes sense to also exploit the living ones. The 'RATS will do anything to bring Communism to America. For some reason, 'RATS think Communism will work here where it won't work anywhere else. They whine about the "poverty" and the "poor" all the time. They never bring up the "poor" and the "poverty" in China, Cuba and North Korea.
Somehow Cronkite and his ilk became the Democratic Party.
I have no doubt there are many negatively affected and negative veterans out and about. We are, after all, talking about a cross section of human nature. Some folks will always find the untenable in their surroundings. I actually pity mamed veterans who decide their lives have been wasted without seeing a contribution based on the cost. That sounds to me like a prescription for bitterness.
