This is actually a pretty good suggestion! After all the Newspapers are competing with folks with no real editors and no real publishers!

I can see Berke Breathed doing that, if it had happened during the heydays of "Bloom County." However, I have a feeling some readers won't get offended until the astrology column is pulled.

Our own rag, the Orlando Sentinel, has gotten so bad that I won't use it to line the birdcage. Two weeks ago the Sentinel announced it would be laying off more than a hundred workers, and my response was: "It couldn't happen to a nicer paper!"

"However, I have a feeling some readers won't get offended until the astrology column is pulled."

Berosus,
I say the same thing. Either that or the "Contact Bridge" report, or column, or blurb, whatever it is.
There's plenty that can go from the local paper. My local paper (The Reading Eagle) should just use their heads and get rid of Molly Ivins' column on Mondays. I swear I've not spoken to a single person, conservative, moderate or lib, who says they can stick to the end of that thing. There's some advertising space to make money, and on the editorial page no less.

I am certain there are many talented people out there who can do comic strips and good ones too. It would be great to see some of those strips on Free Republic. What a forum this is.

When I read the local paper, Dallas Mourning Blues, I sometimes feel that I'm reading something from 1984. War is peace, hate is love, lies are the truth.

I don't even trust the want adds anymore.

You have stumbled on Kerrythink.

KerryThink

I sort of like that - it gives double-speak a more precise meaning. "To be or not to be," simultaneously.

That strip was pulled from the Ventura County Star because it was too conservative. Can't have "equal time", you know!

The "powers" just don't understand that the Internet offers a better choice of factual, balanced info. Print news had better change their way of "creating news," or they'll just become a passle of National Enquirers.

Slightly off topic, but didn't the "Dondi" comic strip end with Dondi being killed? Or is there anyone alive who still even remembers Dondi? I couldn't see that happening with "Blondie" or "Beetle Bailey."

And I am so naive that I predicted the National Enquirer and its clones would not sell well.....

I keep hoping someone would bring back "Lil Abner." We lived with it in the White House for eight years.

Yeah, except there was no Daisy Mae. I guess Hillary was Mammy Yoakum.
