NEW YORK If Shakespeares plays had gotten ratings in the 16th and 17th centuries, some might have been too sexually daring or violent to be labeled PG-13 or even R.
But back then, bans and tossed tomatoes were about the only way audiences and leaders could show their disapproval of explicit scenes and risqué plots.
With a modern-day Shakespearian doomed-love tragedy called "Brokeback Mountain" opening this weekend, the debate over this country's ratings system handled by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has once again bubbled over like the witches cauldron in Macbeth.
The much-blogged-about, critically acclaimed Ang Lee film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger is rated R. But its storyline of two male ranch hands who fall for each other in the early 60s and keep their relationship a secret has led some to wonder why the movie didnt get an NC-17.
I think the only reason it got an R is because Ang Lee directed it, said film critic Anderson Jones, referring to the clout of the director behind Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Ice Storm and Hulk. I dont believe it deserved an NC-17 rating, but Im surprised it didnt get one considering the storyline.

I suggest we throw tomatoes.
Nothing like gay cowboys eating pudding to pack the box office.
Yeah, Hollywood really reflects the interests of mainstream America. (sarcasm) Oh yeah, that's right, most of us normal people live in flyover land, I guess we don't count. (I live in Massachusetts, but wish I lived in flyover land)
Is this article actually comparing this homosexual film to Shakespeare?

You might want to see the Chronicles of Narnia. It is a movie with good values and a Christian message.
whats vh1 and mtv? is it like Hiv?? or SNL? Most is TVMR- TV mind rot.
So is there a lot of bareback mountin' in this cowboy movie?
"You might want to see the Chronicles of Narnia. It is a movie with good values and a Christian message."
always an exception ; black hawk down, Passion, Mel Gibson movies always seem worth it. But if it's got looney Clooney, or the lefty loud mouths forget it. It's my money and it ain't likely any of them will see any of it.
I saw a preview of this movie and that alone was enough to make me react to it the same way I would have if I had just eaten half of a burrito only to discover a live cockroach wigging inside of it. In other news Hollywood wonders why ticket sales are slumping.
BTW, Bareback Mountin' is the obvious name for the gay porn version.
"the gay porn version"

Through the valley and into the cave...
