Isn’t 25 years of Burning Candles for Lennon just Boringly Enough Already?

Observing this as an atheist...

Thank you for the ping. I am glad to know that you recognized me as one who would appreciate your comments. And I do.

You have made a great many truth-filled observations.

One thing you still appear to lack (tell me if I am wrong):
Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

What you see all around is the second and universal advent of Sodom and Gomorrah.

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God...
2 Timothy 3:1-4

Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire.

First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation." But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.
2 Peter 3:3-13

See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised,

"Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens."

The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our "God is a consuming fire."
Hebrews 12:25-29

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
John 15:5-6

I say these things so boldly to you because it is very obvious that the Lord has been speaking to you for years. Like Abraham, I see in you the desire for the City With Foundations, whose Builder and Maker is God, the Home of Righteousness. Why do you delay entering through the Gate when you yourself can see the end so near?

Does not Wisdom call? And Understanding lift up her voice?
One top of the heights, beside the Way, where the paths meet she takes her stand.
Beside the Gates, at the opening to the City, at the entrance of the doors she cries out:
"To you, O men, I call, and my voice is the sons of men.
O naive ones! understand Prudence; and O fools! understand Wisdom.
Listen! for I will speak noble things, and the opening of my lips will reveal right things.
For my mouth will utter Truth, and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
All the utterances of my mouth are in Righteousness; there is nothing crooked or perverted in them.
They are all straightforward to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge."
Proverbs 8:1-9

Again, I didn't say I didn't respect artists, or athletes, or what they do. Some deserve respect for the hard work they've put in to hone God given talent.

But...the attention and financial rewards coming their way in our culture are growing ever more obscene.

Besides, it's getting harder and harder to discern any real talent anymore, what with all the packaging and hype.

Two different topics, really. One is the fascination with entertainers and entertainment fueled by very aggressive marketing.

The other is the salaries of about 500 people. The top of the heap -- where the big stars reside -- is a very small club. It just seems like there's more because of the marketing.

But if you compare the salary against the profit potential, then the salaries make sense. Figure Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt get about $20 million a picture, maybe a little more and maybe a little less. That's more than most families will see through ten generations of combined earnings. Over their professional lives they'll probably make a couple hundred million.

However, the product they produce will generate billions for the corporations and stock holders. In this respect, they're no different than any other brand name product, like Ivory Soap or M&Ms.

That was the one. I'd love to get a good boot of that show.

I was mistaken about the Ventura show -- saw 'em in '87, not '86. .....and also in '84 (we were at that same gig).

Then you will be just THRILLED to learn that we followed him and the rest of the Beatles for miles from the Oakland Airport on-ramp as they were being conveyed to Candle Stick Park in a Brinks Security Truck for their last US concert.

I liked Lennon's songs on his last album "Double Fantasy", an album that was unfortunately marred by Yoko's contributions.

I felt that John was headed in the right direction around 1980. He seemed to have gotten his head on somewhat straight and was about to experience a creative rebirth. Maybe he never would have have become a conservative but it looked like maybe he wasn't going to be a hippy-dippy flower-power liberal anymore either. Maybe, given a few more years, he would have dumped Yoko too and put out a lot more good music. We'll never know but that is how I'd rather remember Lennon.

That site is amazing...pretty much EVERY Dead show is on it, sbd or audience recordings. The Dead just pulled the sbd for downloading, but you can still stream the audio. I have recorded a bunch of stuff off the site. Some of my cassettes are actually better than the ones on the site...it IS an amazing site--ENJOY!!!!!!

Lennon was a hard core communist. His music was great for his audience and boring for others. "Imagine" was the essence of moral relativism.

Drugs, sex and rock and roll were certainly his forte as with so many “rock stars” of the decade, that is when he wasn’t totally impotent, often due to use heroin.

And I always thought he was pure as the driven slush!

He was just a sorry creep all along and not just a regulat S.O.B. that everybody could love or hate.

Agreed, they're cash cows for lots and lots of "smaller" people. Some of that 500 you mention are an industry unto themselves.

I stand by what I said earlier. What they do is not worth what they are paid for it. They are valued, as a group and individually, to an obscene level.

We're talking past each other. End of posts on this topic.
