Mr. Chertoff outlined what he called a three-pronged plan to get control of the border, including increasing the government's ability to catch people who are illegally crossing into the United States, establishing a "robust" interior enforcement program, and creating a temporary guest-worker program to deal with illegals already in the country.

That's the answer then, make them all legal, problem solved??

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff yesterday said illegal immigration is a "severe and growing threat" and while it will take time to correct, the government has begun a campaign to secure America's borders.

Growing? Growing?

This reminds me of that scene in Alien:

Ash: It boils down to this being one tough little SOB
Ripley: And you let him on the ship.

We have been screaming about this for 10 years, and especially since 9/11. And NOW they admit to there being a problem?

And within the context of an amnesty?

Jeeze -- these people are insane. The entire administration.

Illegal migration ... undercuts the rule of law, it undermines our national security, and it imposes public safety and economic strains on our borders, states and communities," Mr. Chertoff said in a speech during the American Legislative Exchange Council's (ALEC) policy summit in Washington.

Yes; but President Bush thinks it's a migration of peace. - Tom

I don't know why these puke politicians can't figure out that passing an amnesty bill will cause thousands, if not millions, more illegal aliens to cross the border to meet the deadline. It happened before and it will happen again. They are all clueless and need to be voted out of office. Isn't there any conservatives in the republican party at all? F**king Rinos, they think we are all stupid as hell.

I wish somebody would explain to me why the economic strains will be any less when we turn the illegals into guests. Is part of the guest worker program to shoot their kids? Education is the biggest expense. Are they going to quite getting sick? Propping up emergency rooms who provide free health care is another huge expense. I don't see how turning a bunch of illegals who are an economic burden into guests who are an economic burden is going to help anything.

Everybody yaks about walls and tommyguns along the border, but interior enforcement is a BIG part of immigration control.

Illegal immigrants largely KNOW that once in, little to nothing is done to find and expell them.

They get around with fake documents. They put their kids in school. They rent housing. Buy and register cars.

They find willing employers, and the employers risk only tiny penalties.

And the feds have a couple dozen folks, doing a handful of raids, nationwide.

It is a joke.

Chertoff is a lawyer. A career bureaucrat. Skilled in the rhetoric of gubmint.

"Listen up folks. We are doing more, spending more." blah blah blah

"He said the president's proposed guest-worker program would make it possible for the government to channel foreign nationals into a legal regulated and temporary way to do work and then go home again."

Foreign Nationals? Why not tell the truth and put Mexicans there instead?. Polish, Africans, Philippinos, Irish, etc etc etc will not be eligible for this program. Only Mexicans.

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

Seeing as how his plan is fully underway it's okay to start talking tough.

"Chertoff Says Illegal Migration 'Threat'"

What's an even bigger threat to our country and culture is our immigration laws and policies of the past 40 years.

America beware! Our country is being gradually diluted through immigration laws to eventually resemble another third world country. Our progeny will damn us for allowing this to take place.

In the mean time, be prepared, be armed.

I wonder how he could possibly come up with that truism all by himself? We have been repeating the very thing for years now, and he just gets it? Hep me! Have Tancredo give him a call and help him understand the problem.

Typical bait-and-switch. Guest workers are no part of controlling the border. We should now start asking the "temporary guest worker" advocates who will fill those low-wage jobs vacated by these new "legals" as they move up the economic ladder. Oh yeah, the next tsunami of illegals who will lay low, waiting for yet another "temp worker" plan to be advocated.
