Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff yesterday said illegal immigration is a "severe and growing threat" and while it will take time to correct, the government has begun a campaign to secure America's borders.
"Illegal migration ... undercuts the rule of law, it undermines our national security, and it imposes public safety and economic strains on our borders, states and communities," Mr. Chertoff said in a speech during the American Legislative Exchange Council's (ALEC) policy summit in Washington.

That's the answer then, make them all legal, problem solved??

Growing? Growing?
This reminds me of that scene in Alien:
Ash: It boils down to this being one tough little SOB
Ripley: And you let him on the ship.
We have been screaming about this for 10 years, and especially since 9/11. And NOW they admit to there being a problem?
And within the context of an amnesty?
Jeeze -- these people are insane. The entire administration.

Somewhere I read that a congressman from California Gary Miller stated yesterday on West Coast radio station that he was promised by House leadership no amnesty bill would be going through regardless of what the Senate did. I just hope Chertoff doesn't know something contrary to what the rest of us are hearing because amnesty will never fly with most people.
Yes; but President Bush thinks it's a migration of peace. - Tom
can anyone explain to me why my niece on a flight from new zealand to the uk with a stop off in L.A. twice had her finger prints and photo taken at L.A. when any tom , dick , or harry seems to be able to cross your southern border . this rearly does make a mockery of your security not that i`m impressed with our border controls either .
I don't know why these puke politicians can't figure out that passing an amnesty bill will cause thousands, if not millions, more illegal aliens to cross the border to meet the deadline. It happened before and it will happen again. They are all clueless and need to be voted out of office. Isn't there any conservatives in the republican party at all? F**king Rinos, they think we are all stupid as hell.
They must think frisking everyone at airports more aggressively makes them look like they're doing their jobs but the fact is homeland security is a joke as long as the borders remain wide open.
I wish somebody would explain to me why the economic strains will be any less when we turn the illegals into guests. Is part of the guest worker program to shoot their kids? Education is the biggest expense. Are they going to quite getting sick? Propping up emergency rooms who provide free health care is another huge expense. I don't see how turning a bunch of illegals who are an economic burden into guests who are an economic burden is going to help anything.
Everybody yaks about walls and tommyguns along the border, but interior enforcement is a BIG part of immigration control.
Illegal immigrants largely KNOW that once in, little to nothing is done to find and expell them.
They get around with fake documents. They put their kids in school. They rent housing. Buy and register cars.
They find willing employers, and the employers risk only tiny penalties.
And the feds have a couple dozen folks, doing a handful of raids, nationwide.
It is a joke.
Chertoff is a lawyer. A career bureaucrat. Skilled in the rhetoric of gubmint.
"Listen up folks. We are doing more, spending more." blah blah blah
Giving amnesty aka "guest worker" status to illegals already here does more to undermine border security than a 100-foot concrete wall with a minefield on each side would do to enhance it.
And that's exactly why quislings like Chertoff insist that it be piggybacked to a border-security bill. They know it would never get anywhere on its own.
Good questions, too bad nobody in the media wants to ask them...
Man, this guy's really sharp.
criminal invaders go home!
Chertoff, you are a traitor, and a liar!
