State GOP Urges Clinton Challenger to Drop Out

State Republican Party leaders meeting in Albany recommended that Jeanine Pirro abandon her struggling campaign to challenge Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and instead run for state attorney general.

State GOP Chairman Stephen Minarik said that no vote was taken but that the recommendation was the consensus of the county leaders. Rockland County Chairman Vincent Reda said support for a Pirro switch was "overwhelming."

But... but... Yeah, she probably should switch. Face it, the only person with even a shot of beating her is Rudy Giuliani...

More from the NY Times:

ALBANY, Dec. 12 - After weeks of messy public squabbling, leaders of the New York Republican Party met in a smoke-free back room here on Monday and reversed course, urging Jeanine F. Pirro to quit her bid to unseat Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and run for state attorney general next year.

Ms. Pirro, the district attorney of Westchester County, immediately issued a statement rejecting the suggestion, saying, "I remain a candidate for U.S. Senate, but I greatly respect the opinion of the county chairs and their confidence in my abilities as a statewide candidate."

The shift by the party came just six months after many of the same Republican leaders recruited her for the bid, and it signaled the mounting disarray of a state party that finds itself in danger of losing the governor's mansion and its majority in the State Senate in 2006. Should Ms. Pirro ultimately pull out, as many party leaders expect, Republicans will be left without a high-profile challenger to Mrs. Clinton as she seeks a commanding re-election victory in advance of a possible presidential bid in 2008.

Too bad Pirro is screwing up badly in her run for Senate. I wish she would shut up about Hillary running in 2008 and get Hillary on issues important to NYers.

If Pirro switches to the attorney general race, would Cox step back into the senate race? Would he have a chance against Hillary?

I don't think so. John Spencer will be the one.

The state GOP keeps on f'ing everything up, they should just sit down and shut up and let Pirro make her own blasted decision.

I disagree. When a candidate runs as lousy a campaign as she's been running, the party has an obligation to try and re-shape the race.

As I've said before, Jeannine should Disa-Pirro and endorse John Spencer on the way out the door. She need had a prayer of winning a GOP primary. We don't vote for baby killing queer "marrige" fans that can't separate themselves from Hillary.
