Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution states that the United States shall guarantee to the states a republican form of government. So apparently there's a federal hook here, if the Bush administration wants to use it. I'm betting they'll stay well clear.

Well I think that is what we are trying to do but the bitch went and took that ability away from the voters. Can't exactly vote them out if they disallow elections.

However, the wimpy Republicans could have stood up a long time ago when Woody Jenkins had enough evidence of voter fraud to have won the senate election in 96 but they deferred to the women senators and look at who we got stuck with. Do you realize just how different things could have been in the past 9 years with another solid conservative republican in the senate?

Thanks for the ping, I have forwarded the info on to my Louisiana relatives, I'm sure they'll sign any petition and get many more to do so.

"...let the recall begin."

Seems like with N.O. empty, that has to have a significant effect on LA politics. Maybe a recall would be a good way to test Republican/conservative strength, if any, in the state sans New Orleans.

Wow, New Orleans will never be the same again, and the Democrats are freaked.

Hmm.... we may have to start thinking about who we want to lead this charge, since they'll be in the best position to win the Governorship.

It's certainly possible. Last poll I saw had Blanco's numbers taking a beating after Katrina, and with much of the NO population displaced, if it happens soon she could be in trouble.

I thought only banana republics did this.

From Article IV, Section 4: "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government ..."

That means no Mayor-for-Life, not even in NOLA.

Unfortunately, there was some talk on here that former Senator Breaux may challenge Blanco, and he may still be popular enough to pull it off. We may have to do this before the 2007 election to head him off.

"Is there any provision for such behavior in the constitution or laws of Louisiana? "

If there is, it doesn't matter. The US Constitution forbids it.

US Constitution, Article 4, section 4:

"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence."

"Does any knowledgeable person know if we can win this one?"

That is the question, and I'm certainly not the one who can answer it. I would say that it has been done before. David Treen was, I believe, the last Republican Governor and that was around the late seventies. someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

The wild card is Hurricane KLatrina and how much animosity the survivors have toward the incumbents, as well as the huge shift in voter strength in New Orleans. Also, if John Breaux runs for governor, it would be, in my opinion, almost impossible for a republican to win any statewide office.

Those are my thoughts, but they are not bankable.

Actually I believe that the lawsuit was by voters from all parties and walks of life in NOLA. So in essence they are doing something.
