The WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team has uncovered new information surrounding the mysterious Web user known as MD4Bush.
In private e-mail exchanges, MD4Bush coaxed Joe Steffen, a former aide to Gov. Bob Ehrlich, into discussing rumors about Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley's personal life on the conservative Web site, FreeRepublic.com.
The 11 News I-Team has uncovered e-mail addresses used to register the MD4Bush account on the Free Republic Web site. The 11 News I-Team does not know who opened the MD4Bush account.
According to a source familiar with the MD4Bush postings, the e-mail address used in October 2004 to open the MD4Bush account is: ryanrock2004@yahoo.com.
Sources said that e-mail address was later changed to rodoherty@mddems.org, then changed for a third time to brianwaverly@yahoo.com. That third e-mail address remains as the address registered on the Free Republic account, which remains open.
Free Republic Web founder Jim Robinson refused to publicly disclose the electronic trail of MD4Bush; however, he authorized a statement weeks ago, as follows:
"Free Republic has evidence that an mddems.org e-mail address is associated with the MD4Bush account. This is not just coincidence," Free Republic spokeswoman Kristinn Taylor said.
According to Free Republic, anyone who has the password to the MD4Bush account could change the e-mail registration address at any time. It is not known how many people may have had access to that password.
MD4Bush used e-mails to coax former gubernatorial aide Joe Steffen into discussing rumors on a conservative Web site about the personal life of Baltimore's mayor. The e-mail address information obtained does not shed light on the actual users of the MD4Bush account, nor does it reveal whether someone attached the Ryan O'Doherty e-mail address to the account without his knowledge.

Basically, MD4Bush baited FReeper NCPAC (a.k.a. Joseph Steffen, an aide to Maryland Governor Ehrlich (R)) into discussing rumors about Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley's (D) alleged affairs. Some of these conversations were via FReepmail, which was turned over to the Washington Post. The original articles were rather one sided, accusing NCPAC of spreading rumors on Free Republic when he did nothing more than commented on them. Steffen was fired in real life. And we've been trying to figure out who MD4Bush was ever since. Most evidence now points to Ryan O'Doherty, who was spokesman for the Maryland Democrat party at the time the rumors were spread. And MD4Bush himself was spreading rumors about the Baltimore mayor, Senator Mikulski(D) and other Democrats in his baiting attempts.
More in the
primer.

I've been following this story for a long time. It's STILL clear as mud to me. Someday, someone will post a concise, clearly written paragraph on this plot which will enlighten us all. The poster will also untangle the tangled cast of characters.
Actually, I imagine most freepers like myself have become bored with this intrigue because they don't know what the heck went on or is still going on. I don't think anyone cares a hoot anymore.

So, what are they going to do, bust us all out? I'd like to see them get me fired. I think we should start tracking some of these guys down and posting their personal details. Good for the goose etc.

If all of this is accurate, that would be most of what FR was in a position to know about the identity of MD4Bush.

IP addresses, too. Y'all should check out the video on the site. It's obvious that the additional "PC-ification" of the Kristinn's identity came from the web editor, since the actual quote shown on the screen says "spokesperson." Also, the video points out that our boy Ryan was the tech person at mddems.org, in charge of e-mail addresses, etc.

These Maryland Dems got the idea from me....probably.
I posted at DNC Kick Ass a remark after they got Saddaam that was reported on FOX News Channel and multiple sources as coming from a Democrat.
Just do a google search of my name and you will see what I posted. It made national news as part of the Dem meltdown.

The gloom was even deeper over on the Democratic National Committee's online forum. Pam Bergren writes -- "I personally don't care too much that Hussein was caught -- he never did anything to me." Someone named Marsh says -- "This is supposed to be a war on terror, not a war on tyranny." And Erik Latranyi says it -- "takes the 'failure to capture' issue off the table. ... what is left? Oh, yes, the capture of Bin Laden. If that happens, we are completely sunk."
LOL! You're smooth.
To: Gondring
spokeswoman Kristinn Taylor I read the excerpt and shrugged. "Damn," I thought to myself, "I thought Kristinn was a man."
Then my mind recalls actually SEEING pics of Kristinn and damn, they were pics of a MAN. I shrug again. "Maybe I was looking at the wrong person," I think. "Maybe there was a woman in the picture."
Will I ever learn not to trust these "journalists" with the facts?

I'm sure the IP addresses on all MD4Bush activities are logged. What is different here is the disclosure of the additional email addresses.
"..According to a source familiar with the MD4Bush postings, the e-mail address used in October 2004 to open the MD4Bush account is: ryanrock2004@yahoo.com..."
In order to activate a password a valid email is necessary, but the IP of the computer would remain the same. What MD4Bush did to conceal himself would only work in a case where the administrator of a site was not sufficiently interested in tracking him down.
The FR feature that allows changeing e-mail registration address at any time is for the convenience of the users and won't help conceal the identity of the computer the posts were made from.

Free Republic spokeswoman Kristinn Taylor
This embarrassing mistake could have been avoided if the reporter had just opted for the gender-neutral, politically correct title "spokesperson."

Excellent post.
To all, be sure to view the video story (maybe a couple of times to catch the complex links to the all the players).
For his good work in getting Steffen fired, Ryan O'Doherty has been rewarded with a no-compete appointment to a newly created position with the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, which is associated with Baltimore city hall.

My reply above and the WBAL story itself (especially his no-comment responses to reporters) point to O'Doherty as a player in this. But we (FR readers) don't know his part, or (if someone used his email without his knowledge) even if he is directly implicated.

The other information would be what IP addresses were associated with those logins....possibly from the Dems' cave? That would show it wasn't just someone using RyDo's e-mail address, but ...

There is a lesson in this intriguing tale.
Everything published on FreeRepublic, whether public or private, is preserved and is ultimately part of the public record.
Your utterances will be available to your friends, your enemies, your children and their children.

"..(if someone used his email without his knowledge).."
Why would anyone do that? Steffen was a GOP operative that they wanted to get. I don't see any possible advantage to "frame" O'Doherty, though I would not be surprised if he claimed that.
The use of the first mail drop shows an intent to hide his identity. The use of the regular email was most likely laziness or possibly because he forgot the password to the maildrop or, more stupidly, used the FR password for the mail drop and wanted to delete it.
To: conservative in nyc
I wonder, if given a few more weeks, the "The WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team" could uncover the fact that Kristinn is a manly man rather than a spokeswoman?

Does it get us closer to the identity of MD4Bush? Well, we have the e-mail addresses, but no way of knowing who owns the Yahoo addresses. I've found nothing on a Google, Google Groups or Yahoo search using those addresses.
There's a lot of evidence pointing to Ryan O'Doherty as MD4Bush, but no absolute proof that he was MD4Bush - yet. ryanrock2004@yahoo.com is another link to a guy named Ryan as MD4Bush.

Excellent interview you gave to Neil Cavuto. Points you made eleven months ago regarding upcoming Iraqi elections, the lack of positive new media coverage and failure of the Bush administration to effectively communicate our successes in Iraq are as true today as when you gave the interview (the day before the Bush second inauguration).
