Turning the Corner

I'm sure it's a coincidence, but suddenly I'm seeing a President George W. Bush who is acting in ways this columnist and others have been wanting to see for what seems like ages. I think his newfound efforts will prove politically fruitful.

For too long the president has appeared out of touch with the public in his attempts to defend the Iraq war. He has stumbled repeatedly in trying to answer nagging issues about flawed intelligence, and whether the believed existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq was or was not the sole reason for removing Saddam Hussein from power.

In a series of speeches this week, Bush departed from his prior line of rhetoric, and even his prior delivery style. Following one speech on Iraq, the president took everyone aback by fielding questions from the audience.

It was a deft public relations move. It reminded us that this was the same George W. Bush who bounced back from a poor debate against John Kerry in the presidential campaign to equal or better Kerry in the debate that followed.

W is right (what he said on Hume's interview recently) - you can't effectively respond to war critics when the media will just change the subject to Katrina. Tough call, but probably the right one.

Remember, early in the war when Bush called on all the ROP folks to come on over to Iraq and take on the US? That is why we went to Iraq.

The WMD was an argument offered to get France on board and was one of many concerns for the US. Sadam's refusal to cooperate with the cease fire agreement/wmd inspection explains why we chose to use Iraq as the battle ground for the main purpose of the war - drawn in, kill, caputre and gain intellegence on the ROP.

We needed to deal with all the Islamonazis trained for jihad while Reno and Clinton's were running around the country looking for "extreme right" terrorists - like hate speech perps, abortion protestors, smokers and gun owners.

One other thing: We are not in Iraq for the purpose of building democracy and heating their shacks. We are there to fight terrorists and to make amends to the Iraqi people, we are trying to give them a chance to change their destinies. If they fail to grasp freedom, liberals will claim we "lost the war" as if the central purpose of the war was to establish freedom in Iraq. The central purpose is to kill, capture and gain intellegence on the jihadis stationed around the world - but especially in the US and Europe.

If thats the central purpose, an invasion of the U.S. east coast and Europe would have been more fruitful. The brains and the sponsors of Islamic fundamentalism wouldn't put themselves in a position where they need to dodge bullets or become martyrs.

No, but they put themselves in computers and networks of terrorists busted in Iraq and expose themselves in the US and Europe. And when they are raided, we get more connections and sympathizers. Did someone really have to explain this to you?
