Religion in America: Church and State

Sunday, December 18, 2005

Sun., Dec. 18 at 10 p.m. ET

Repeats at midnight

Hosted by Brit Hume

Across the country, Americans are getting ready for Christmas and Hanukkah. Fifty years ago, the lighting of Christmas trees and Menorahs would have been as uncontroversial as the notion of loving your country.

But not any more.

For the past half-century, the first country in the world to guarantee religious freedom has been locked in a legal war that has driven the symbols of God and religion out of its schools and courthouses, its statehouses and city halls and threatens to go further.

This weekend, join host Brit Hume as FOX News tour of the religious battlefields of the United States.

We'll show you what the Founding Fathers thought they were doing when they first guaranteed American religious freedom.

We'll investigate how the wall of separation between church and state really gets built in modern America and how Americans are fighting back.

Tune in for a fair and balanced examination one of the most divisive and important issues in America today.

Could you guys with cable keep those of us without up to date on how it goes? There are occasions I wish we had it but it's not often enough to justify the expense.

But it's from Fox News! It's right-wing propaganda. (sarcasm)

Keeping cable challenged FReepers up to date...

I believe FNC publishes transcripts. However, because I am working on a movie, I am documenting this in bullets. Hope I get them all.

Supreme court decision Everson vs Board of Education, New Jersey. Judge Black lifts "wall of separation" quote from Jefferson's 1801 comments to deny public school bussing of students to parochial schools. Seen as anti Catholic.

I'm glad they exposed the anti-Catholic roots of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and the whole secularist movement. Hugo Black was a Klansman who hated Catholicism.

Fr. James Coyle

Hugo Black, who wrote the Emerson decision that started this whole anti-religious push, defended the murderer of Fr. Coyle.

I've been watching this program from the beginning. This is the most accurate televised discussion of the origin and meaning of the First Amendment's religious clauses that I've ever seen. Even before it's over, I recommend that all interested in this subject, tape and keep this program as a primer on this subject.

I say that not as a layman, but as a longtime practitioner of First Amendment law.
