Bush's Support Jumps After a Long Decline, Americans Optimistic on Iraq, Economy
Washington Post ^ | December 20, 2005 | Dan Balz and Richard Morin

President Bush's approval rating has surged in recent weeks, reversing what had been an extended period of decline, with Americans now expressing renewed optimism about the future of democracy in Iraq, the campaign against terrorism and the U.S. economy, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News Poll.

Bush's overall approval rating rose to 47 percent, from 39 percent in early November, with 52 percent saying they disapprove of how he is handling his job. His approval rating on Iraq jumped 10 percentage points since early November, to 46 percent, while his rating on the economy rose 11 points, to 47 percent. A clear majority, 56 percent, said they approve of the way Bush is handling the fight against terrorism -- a traditional strong point in his reputation that nonetheless had flagged to 48 percent in the November poll.

The marked improvement in Bush's fortunes comes after months of erosion in the president's political standing that tracked a series of problems afflicting his administration. The most significant was the continuing violence and mounting U.S. casualties in Iraq, but high gasoline prices and the federal government's slow response to Hurricane Katrina also caused increasing numbers of Americans to register doubts about Bush's leadership.

Bush's approval rating is 51.3%.

That was confirmed in the National Election.

Everything else is guesswork and worse, sedition!

Sometimes I think they let the rats and the marxist-media have enough rope to hang themselves. But it just seems like they went too long before yanking on the slack.

It's strange these polls don't seem to have any or very little "undecided" or "no opinion" answers anymore.

Poor liberals. All of the racist agitprop with Katrina didn't pan out. The civil liberties spew isn't working.

What to do but get even more insane and call for impeachment.

I'm very eager to see the real questions and statistics behind this poll. While the poll acknowledges an up-tick in Bush support, I'm suspicious about a majority still disaproving. At 52-47% that means only 1% had no opinion, etc.

Or maybe because of the wire tapping? The more Democrats appear weak on terrorism, the better the alternative appears.

After President Bush's comments over the last several weeks and his strong statements yesterday morning (Mon) at the press conference, I doubt he cares much about his poll numbers.

Here are the Three Main Points that Tokyo Rose used in every program to break the will of America's fighting men and women.

1. She told them that their President was lying to them.

2. She told them that they were fighting a war they couldn't win.

3. She told them they were fighting because the big corporations wanted things in Japan and SE Asia.

Are we hearing these same things right now?

Who are the Modern Day Tokyo Roses?

Why should he have to do that?

Why does he have to continually placate a public with an attention span of a nanosecond and so easily distracted by the latest Brittany Spears scandal?

Just in time for the mid term elections.

The democRATS are on suicide watch.

Strategery??? You bet!! Never misunderestimate President Bush ( or Karl Rove )

GO "W" GO!!!

Democs have been placed on 24 suicide watch after getting this from the WP.

And, why do you think all this baloney about the wiretaps has come out? They can't stand to see Bush doing well, happens everytime!

In fact, you can almost predict it, the RATS are so transparent!

Dems have continued to try and find some dirt to throw on the wall that sticks against this President...Now, with this treasonous talk of abuse of Presidential power they've thrown the worst mud against the wall and we Americans are the wall they've thrown it at! Well, I'm fed UP and am as mad as HELL and won't sit idly by...faxes, e-mails, phone calls are all on my Christmas list to do this week now and I got going today with Senator Kyl and Frist.

I so agree with your sentiments. Yet... we have to be grounded in political realities. There is continuous daily erosion of his (our) position in the MSM, and in the legislative branch (thanks Reid, Pelosi, McCain, et al).

W knew this was going to happen from the very first: do you remember him pressing the fact, in late 2001, that this war was going to take, perhaps, "generations"? It just seems that after this last election, he had forgotten to remind everyone; now, I'm glad he's taken that mantle back up again.

I agree with you: pathetic.

Yet, necessary. And I'm glad he's finally doing it. :)

I think we're having an effect on them. They can't be SO stupid as to ignore their plummeting audience forever.

The funny thing is, I bet a lot of the editors consider this report "balance", which of course just compunds their problems.

And I agree with you...

Sometimes, you have to wonder if a society that has to be constantly reminded that it is at war and must be defended deserves to survive...

LOL...perhaps this current society doesn't "deserve to survive". However, the principles upon which this American society are built, DO deserve to survive. It is those principles for which our Armed Services fight. And it is those principles to which all of us here in the US must continually aspire, whether it seems like an uphill battle at the time or not.

It's the role of the Commander in Chief to keep these principles in our face. Thank Goodness he's started to do that. ;)

Funny, CNN had a story on a Gallup Poll that showed no change in Bush's approval rating even after his recent speeches. I see the story is gone from their website now.

All societies, going back to the Greeks and Romans "had to be reminded." It is man's nature to wish evil didn't exist---except for those evil men who want everyone else to think that way!
