WASHINGTON The National Security Agency has conducted much broader surveillance of e-mails and phone calls without court orders than the Bush administration has acknowledged, The New York Times reported on its Web site.
The NSA, with help from American telecommunications companies, obtained access to streams of domestic and international communications, said the Times in the report late Friday, citing unidentified current and former government officials.
The story did not name the companies.
Since the Times disclosed the domestic spying program last week, President Bush has stressed that his executive order allowing the eavesdropping was limited to people with known links to Al Qaeda.
But the Times said that NSA technicians have combed through large volumes of phone and Internet traffic in search of patterns that might lead to terrorists.
The volume of information harvested from telecommunications data and voice networks, without court-approved warrants, is much larger than the White House has acknowledged, the paper said, quoting an unnamed official.
The story quoted a former technology manager at a major telecommunications firm as saying that companies have been storing information on calling patterns since the Sept. 11 attacks, and giving it to the federal government. Neither the manager nor the company he worked for was identified.

Oh no -- and I searched -- oh well -- Merry Christmas!!!
Of course true intelligence gathering will never consist of reading the nyLies
The key to searching normally is not to use the entire article title, rather one of the key words, then sort by date.
You mean the President didn't reveal all his secret security actions to the NYTimes?! Impeach!!!!!
OMG!!! What's the world coming to! The President of the US trying to protect the country by looking for patterns of communcation that might lead to terrorists!
Couple this with the OFF revelations and you have the makings of a Democrat scandal of epic proportions.
The only question that remains is whether or not the Pubbies have the balls to finish this off. I fear we already have the answer to that.
The key is the word "domestic" - and the NYT never connects it to "foreign policy".
The calls that were monitored, STARTED IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY and ended here - not the other way around. And .. the NYT always leaves out the fact that the people they're monitoring are already on a list of some kind for their connection to terrorism.
At this rate - the NYT will be out of business sooner than I thought.
The more they beat this drum, the higher Bush's favorability and job approval numbers go. These tools reside in an alternate reality with no idea of what normal Americans think about their nonsense.
"At this rate - the NYT will be out of business sooner than I thought." (CyberAnt)
I hope you are right. The sooner the better, let's keep the pressure on them traitorous bastards. The NYT is going down.
Merry Christmas Freepers, keep up the good fight!
Get a life JERK
Always keep this in mind:
William Tecumseh Sherman
"I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are. If I killed them all there would be news from Hell before breakfast."
Glad to see the NYT, house organ for the RATS, is keeping up its part of the bargin and producing all the "IMPEACH NOW" news that it can posssibly generate in one 24 hour period. Truly Ried and Pelosi are proud of their "newspaper of record". Look for the increasing rant about "Vote for a DemonRAT in '06, and we promise impeachment as our number ONE priority".
