No, I hear hope, the hope that comes from knowledge and understaning. We are a vital country and need to keep and regain even more of our vitality and independence. We need to take our cities back and secure out borders.

That I do not know. Maybe the Claremont Institute would have an archive?

First time I saw Steyn although hear him on Hugh Hewitt frequently.

He is basically talking to those that agree, the other side will listen to Babs "bouncer" Boxer. I had to switch it back to another program for my husband I came back in the computer room.

Steyn's answer to a question about the Churchill view of the EU:
All the successful states are small ones. The United States is the most successful federal system in history, but if it had all been centralized it would have failed 150 years ago. And the trouble with the EU is that it isn't a USA of Europe, it's more like the USSR - and it will end the same way the USSR did.

This is the direct link for the Real Player version [RTSP]:
rtsp://video.c-span.org/60days/ap121705.rm
The clip is about three and a half hours, and starts with Dan "Rostie" Rostenkowski. Fast forward to the 1:31:39 mark to see Steyn's segment.

PS: If there is a Windows Media version [MMS], I couldn't find it.

PPS: You can purchase software packages that will allow you to record a stream like this to your hard-drive [in e.g. MPEG3 format].

He ends by saying that western civilization is going over the cliff but that the good news is that Europe is in line ahead of us.

Highlights:

WF Buckley quoted him: "lard butt" made it sound like a Renaissance painter with his languid vowels.

He's not an American and apropos of that he said that during singing of National Anthem, a guy told him, "Makes you proud to be an American and sorry if you're not."

His son didn't know Pledge of Allegiance. Made Mark think they were like the unassimilated Muslims in France.

Cecil Rhodes: born an Englishman, win the lottery of life. Now it's true for America.

Belgium will have a very hard time holding on to their country.

Same for France. Quotes a Frenchman who said he'd just avoid the riot areas. In time, there will be no area to which to escape.

Why did he leave Canada? To escape taxes (78%!!!!). This bored his listener. The right reason is he loves the town meeting form of government. Called the state for info on education and got the state commissioner of education. He put in for a secretary, but the legislature voted it down.

He's a "fully documented un-American." Leftist have the best euphemisms. "undocumented immigrant" he would never think of. Fully documented immigrant--so was Mohamed Atta.

In France, one commentator called them African American. Another called Nelson Mandela an African American. Another leftist euphemism.

After slogging through the LA Times, one of the jobs Americans won't do is produce a readable newspaper.

Winston was a funny man. Was called a happy warrior. Hitler called him a puppet of international Jewry. Seriously. Really missed who Churchill was.

If Clinton had run for a third term Mark could have retired to the Bahamas on Clinton's sex life. Wrote about Monica's dress being in the witness protection program and is now a curtain in Idaho.

Thought of writing a book on the end of the world. It would be breezily apocalyptic. Agent turned him down.

Going from Monica to the fourth world war with Islamiscists cuts into his humor.

Puzzled by John Kerry's comment about Benedict Arnold CEO's. Has no idea what he's talking about.

Finds it hard to take John Kerry seriously. We live in serious times. Much of the western world will not survive this time.

A lot of Brits wrote and said "Fortunately, I won't live to see it." A lot of changes we will see.

The Islamic war is left over from WW I. The middle East is an Anglo French concoction. Churchill invented Jordan over lunch. Britain and France were too tired after the war to do a good job. They just drew lines in the sand.

Tommy's in the trenches were called lions led by donkeys. After WW I, all Europe procrastinates and delays taking moral stands.

Canada committed to reducing greenhouse gasses 6% under Kyoto.

More highlights:

Yugoslavia split into Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia just along the old Austrian Hungarian empire, just as if the past 80 years haven't happened.

Canada committed to 6% reduction in CO2 emissions. Have achieved an increase in 24.2%. US is doing better than Canada on every environmental indicator. Kyoto is not effective.

The jihad can project themselves to Europe for a couple of hundred bucks. The NATO allies cannot project themselves to the Middle East at all. True asymmetric warfare.

John Kerry speaks pretty bad French and it has no effect diplomatically.

Tony Blair is no Churchill, but there are many Lord Halifaxes. Rotterdam is 40% Muslim. Most popular boy's name is Mohammed. Most Europeans were not aware of these trends until 9/11.

We should speak up for Dutch film maker Theo Van Gohts. He lost his life. Dixie Chicks lost some performances, but posed nude on Entertainment Weekly. Nothing like what Theo lost.

Many Europeans acquiesce to the Muslim terrorism and advance their cause. They want a quiet life--just like they did in the 30's.

Two Jews were killed by Muslims in Paris. No one covered the stories, except two tabloids. Another step down a dark and familiar path.

Lord Halifax was Lord Privy Seal in 1938. Sent to Germany and mistook Hitler for a footman. The elites didn't take Hitler seriously because he wasn't of their class.

This is like Europe--they can't believe the Muslims are taking over.

Wolves are returning to empty villages due to depopulation in eastern Germany. No precedent for this population loss without a war or pandemic.

America wasn't scarred by WW I like Europe was. We came in late and our national character is different.

What America has different from Europe is their religiosity. Atheists have it better here than in Muslim societies. New Hampshire is a gun owning state. This protects the non-gun owners as well as the gun owners. If your a burglar, are you going to take a chance on some stump tooth plaid crazy blowing you away?

Mark called a police station when he heard rustling in his bushes. He asked what the procedure is. "Well, it's better if you deal with it, since you're there."

Gun ownership shows confidence in the people.

America has a lack of socialized medicine--that's good. In Montreal, the average wait for an emergency visit is 48 hours. Don't adopt Canadian health care. Canadians drive to America for health care.

In Europe, your only choice is through the government.

In America, we have a more responsive political class. Our politics is much healthier than Europe. We have the choice of Jesse Helms or Ted Kennedy. In Europe, you have center left or center right.

In Europe, you have no control over which politician will be placed over you. You would vote Republican and you might get Schwarzenegger, or Jim Jeffords.

Europe is in for famine, death, war, and conquest, the four horsemen of the apocolypse. Mark's friend thought this was a joke--it wasn't.

Alan Keyes would say, we stand on the brink of the abyss. But the good news is, the Europeans are ahead of us in line.

That ended his speech. In question and answer, he dealt with buying drugs from Canada. These come from the US. It is ridiculous for the republicans to promote socialized medicine.

Old people are some of the wealthiest people in history.

How does Europe of today differ from the US? Our secret is the decentralization of the US. Europe's problem is that it is too centralized. It is more like the failed Soviet Union. There are regulations on the curvature of cucumbers--and bananas. They have not duplicated the US, but the USSR.

That ended it. He was funny, but serious about the subject.
