Virginia denies benefits to illegals
The Washington Times ^ | December 31, 2005 | Dionne Walker

RICHMOND -- A new Virginia law that bars illegal aliens from receiving state-funded benefits goes into effect tomorrow. The law restricts anybody without a Social Security number from receiving Medicaid, temporary assistance for needy families, and help from several other state and local programs. Supporters say the measure could save the state millions. "A lot of us were saying, instead of raising taxes, why don't we start prioritizing where we're spending our existing money," said Delegate David B. Albo, Fairfax Republican, who sponsored the bill. "One of the things we found was the state was not checking for legal presence for Medicaid."

I wonder if one reason that laws concerning illegals are not enforced is due to this. If all the illegals who owned houses were deported, all those loans would be in default. Imagine what that would do to the economy! It would affect all of us. (Loans default. Bank collapses. Real estate bubble pops.)

I am still in favor of deporting illegals. I guess my point is that we should have been enforcing the laws all along instead of waiting until we got to the point where it would be extremely painful to do so. Better to take the bitter medicine now than to wait until later when the treatment becomes even more painful.

BTW, Amnesty is not the answer. That teaches the lesson that you can get away with illegal activity and it punishes all those who came here legally and did all the hard work required to obtain legal residency and/or citizenship.

What a novel idea. Think we can sell this at the federal level?

Just imagine the effect on the mortgage industry if they suddenly and unexplainably stop receiving payments on all of these properties.

Personally, I think it'd be a windfall for them, as they can immediately foreclose on said properties and resell them at a higher rate. (Assuming the "tenants" didn't completely destroy it first...)

"Wonder how long it will last before some activist liberal judge strikes it down?"

My thought exactly. We passed the same "no benefits for illegals" law here in CA, only to have it immediately struck down by the 9th Circus.

I actually got a letter from my Democrat delegate in our state Assembly, and he was very supportive of this act. Of course, he also gave me the song and dance about how Virginia can't afford to crack down on illegal immigration, and it should be a Federal job. He does seem reasonable on the subject though, and he's representing one of the few openly communist districts in the Commonwealth, so I figure that speaks volumes...

That's the same thought I had at first - If you deport all of the illegals (or encourage them to depart for another state by denying them the social services they thrive on), you'll have massive defaults on mortgages, and the banks behind the mortgages would collapse. But after thinking about it s'more, I think it may actually be good for the banks, as they'd suddenly have clear title to all of the properties in default, and could sell each and every real property for a profit. It may actually end up being a windfall for them, which is why they are so brilliant for loaning to a high-risk group like that. (Unless I'm wrong, in which case they're not brilliant any longer. :) )

Short of deporting illegals, I am all for sending all of them to Maryland. There's not a more deserving state in all of the Nation than those shifty guys north of the Potomac. ;)

We have massive problems with illegals on the Eastern Shore. They are apparently driving up and down U.S. Route 13, without licenses, and are causing quite a large number of fatalities. By no surprise, if they don't bother to follow immigration laws, they have proven not to be inclined to follow DUI laws as well. I'm hoping the General Assembly will do something to discourage the farming conglomerates on the Shore from hiring illegals, which should help the situation somewhat.

Gabz - You're local to that area; How do things look from your perspective?

Praise the Lord that the Old Dominion is not under the jurisdiction of such a bunch of clowns. The 4th Circuit has proven to be extremely conservative, so hopefully we'll luck out.

Preventing illegal aliens from receiving Medicaid only punishes the doctors and hospitals, not the illegals. The illegals continue to receive medical care at Virginia hospitals: it's federal law that the hospital can't turn them away if they show up in the ER complaining of a headache or a term pregnancy, an owie finger or a myocardial infarction. The hospitals provide them with state-of-the-art health care without discrimination, but then won't get paid by Medicaid. And then everybody's surprised when the hospitals go bankrupt and close their doors. Then nobody gets treatment.

Georgia's doing better than that.

As of January 1, 2006, we're going back to having to have citizenship verified by a Certified BIRTH CERTIFICATE. Xeroxed copies won't work any longer.

AND we make a copy and put it in the case record along with a copy of the Social Security card.

We'll still give Emergency Medical Assistance, but only for a Prior Month and no longer 'ongoing' for a pregnant woman.

Lots of changes. Welcome to Paradigm World.

Things have changed on Michael Chertoff's watch. Even if you are legal, there are a lot of things that you have to do now to prove that you're legal, that you've committed no crimes, etc.. Having a social security no. doesn't guarantee that you'll be able to buy a house. There are now a lot of cross-checks built into the process that weren't there before. The Department of Homeland Security is, at least in some aspects, doing a great job.

Yes, Virginia, there are fake Social Security cards.

And fake ones supplied by the state. - Tom

Illegal aliens now ineligible for welfare
Governor Michael Dukakis said Wednesday that the state will stop issuing dummy social security numbers to illegal immigrants, a practice that had enabled the immi- grants to get millions of dollars in state welfare benefits.

While federal officials have said that the practice is per- fectly legal, Dukakis stated that the state could no longer afford it. Muriel- Heilburger of the Massachusetts Immi- grant and Refugee Coalition called the move a tragic re- treat from the state's commitment to help refugees.

That just means the next step would be for the states to encourage hospitals to disobey that federal "law", as it's blatantly unconstitutional.

I must respectfully disagree with you. Hubby is a real estate appraiser. It happens all the time ( hubby will not play along), because there are brokers out there who will do anything for a buck, and banks who will look the other way too. It's all about the mighty dollar, my friend.

We have a friend here in town who is kind of the Godfather of the Mexican community. I am amazed to see how mainstream illegals have become, and very, very few people give a damn.

I am also very good friends with the go to guy for Vietnamese immigrants. Interesting differences between the two communities. The Vietnamese community has tremendous respect for the law, and I have never met an illegal Vietnamese immigrant. And, they work their butts off, they learn English, and they go to college.

Intersting differences, and one that has certainly influenced my views on this subject.

When the illegals apply for perks, they should be deported right away.

While I am all in favor of this law, what is to prevent from some corrupt judge from overturning it? In Arizona, for example, a judge ordered the state to provide more money for schools but also ordered the schools to graduate select students (Hispanics?) even though they failed to pass required tests.
