Dang, he was a bossy cuss.
Happy New Year
Wow -- 104 rules before 16!
Some are pretty good. Some are very good. Some need a 105th rule: Take the Stycke from thine butt.
NEW YEAR'S DAY
New Year's Day--Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions.
Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink, and swore his last oath.
Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever.
We shall also reflect pleasantly upon how we did the same old thing last year about this time.
However, go in, community. New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls, and humbug resolutions, and we wish you to enjoy it with a looseness suited to the greatness of the occasion.
MARK TWAIN
LOLOLOL!!!
Why...do you go picking lice off yourself in front of others??
Only when I really, REALLy itch!
Good manners are always worthwhile. Even among the boorish and the heathen; it sets one apart and demonstrates maturity.
The more I know of Washington, the more I admire him. The right man, in the right place, at the right time.
Time for another visit to Mt. Vernon, to pay my respects. :-)
So true!! The more I learn about our Founding Fathers, the more I am astonished that such men were brought together at that point in time.
It's evem interesting that they fought and squabbled like everyone else...yet produced the greated human endeavor in history!!
Lots of tagline possibilities here.
Well, the first three alone would make old George a very unpopular guy in our local Soddom/Gomorrah (Palm Springs)...
Have you been to Mt. Vernon in the DC area? It'll blow you away if you're seriously into American history. George and Martha Washington are entombed there. The manor is fascinating and beautiful. I live in the area at present, and I try to make it over there as often as possible.
Washington, as a young man was a surveyor, and laid out what is now Oldtown Alexandria in the 1740s, IIRC. I was down there today setting up a network for a client, in a building that was there during the Revolution. I can't drive through old town or Bellehaven (where I learned to sail) without thinking of him.
It's possible (since both were alive then) that George was interviewed by Larry King, judging by this.
Awesome plaque. Really outstanding.
Happy New Year Everyone!
As we welcome Free Republic's 10th year!!
I think #13 pretty much describes a lot of FR discourse...but it denies the true feral nature of a good ZOT!!!:
13th Kill no Vermin as Fleas, lice ticks &c in the Sight of Others, if you See any filth or thick Spittle put your foot Dexteriously upon it if it be upon the Cloths of your Companions, Put it off privately, and if it be upon your own Cloths return Thanks to him who puts it off.
Thanks, so much, Dog Gone!
