The republicans also have to nominate someone with broad appeal. That is reality.

My problem with Newt is the way he treats women in his life. Divorcing his first wife when she was suffering from cancer, having an affair while married to his second. He is the most likely of all the potential candidates to act like Clinton.

True, but they need not give away America to do it. Every time the Repubs run ON CONSERVATISM, they win. Why can't they find someone who will run that way, AND THEN ACT THAT WAY IN THE WHITE HOUSE??? We lost big on Bush in that regard...

NO Senator (or former senator, now pundit/writer) will be President. The Senate is tainted....too many KNOWN ETHICAL PROBLEMS.....they're there own little mafia, and the American public is beginning to see it.

Yes, I'm aware that he left office under a cloud because of a sexual scandal, one of several.
That is certainly troubling, because it puts his moral stability in doubt. It's easy to say that private life and political actions can be kept separate, but political actions flow from character, and character is revealed by private life.
U.S. Grant was a great leader even though he had a drinking problem. The same with Winston Churchill. But they are unusual cases.
What bothers me even more is that Newt knuckled under to the Democrats in his last term in office. He had been hit with a hundred billion dollars in Democrat propaganda, and he evidently couldn't take it any more. Basically he abandoned his principles during that last term and started playign ball with the Democrats.

Is anybody here sure that Gingrich can beat Hillary? From the scenarios I've thought out, Hillary beats all the listed candidates.

Somewhere someday, Newt will bring his latest honey out of the closet for all too see. This will not be a pleasant picture. He is a loner, not a family man, and this picture of the old white guy with his young obedient wife...well a picture is worth a thousand words.
The other joke as a family man, John McCain, could possibly win the nomination if his wife suddenly passed away with loving John at her side...what drama.
Jeb Bush should just get a regular job and stay home and take care of his family. I think that the Bush family has given enough in service to their country.

"Because he [McCain] is independent, outspoken and a war hero"
He's no war hero!
He was a lousy pilot that should have never have gotten his wings and only got them because of admirals in his family history.
He was shot down and captured because of it.
No way would I ever vote for the AH.

The other advantage is Gingrich got out of the beltway and spent time living amongst the real people of America. I think he is more in tune with the real issues bugging the Republicans and Independents than when he was a Congressman isolated by lobbyist and the beltway culture. He had time to rest and regroup his thoughts. I think he will be a surprise and many of his points will resonate.

He has been hanging out with Hillary too much.
My thought exactly. It is obvious that Hillary is running for president and intends to win by careful "planning." So what is her plan?
The plan could be to encourage bith McCain and Gingrich to run -- and not just run but to consider themselves robbed if they don't get the nomination. The one who doesn't get the nomination will be convinced that he, the Republican party, and the country was done a great injustice and that he must run as a third party candidate to save the Republic.
Plus, Gingrich's presence will largely negate the stench of Bill Clintion's sexual perversions.
Granted, I tend to see the odious Clintons behind just about everything, and usually I conclude that I am right.

I think you may have a point with an egomaniac like McCain but not sure about Gingrich. Newt the Wonder Twerp is a "Big R" Republican before anyting else.
McCain is in it for McCain.

how's your memory ?
GW I kicked butt in Desert Storm & had the country behind him
but mounted a miserable relection campaign for '92.
Did he have aspirations for his son to be President ?
If so it would explain above.
> if GHWB won reelection in '92, the VP would be the Pres
candidate in '96 & possibly 2000 - out of reach for GW I
> if a Dem won in '92, it would open up the field for '96
> Knowing there weren't any GOP runaways for '96, let the chips fall ?
> Having (dishwater) Dole get the nomination supports this
Anyone remember that GW began his Pres. run a full 2 years
before the 2000 election ?
> that's not GOP general funds at work !
( I suspect Rockefeller $'s)
> he virtually stole the primary !
> and had a can-do VP to boot !
Since his election, I suspect he may have occasionally disappointed
his handlers with his honesty/integrity & God knows he's disappointed me
passing prescription drug coverage & taking no action on illegal immigration,
tort reform, a national health insurace claim form, etc.
GW II's gone in 2008
Will the faction/$'s behind GWII's 1998-2000 run support a similar effort in 2006-08 ?
