VANITY: Trailer on TV for BrokeBack Mountain intentionally misleading

Posted on 01/07/2006 5:11:11 AM PST by rlmorel

I know there have been a lot of threads about this, but I haven't heard this angle. I don't watch TV, but poked my head in for the sports segment of the news...and when a commercial came on, it was a preview for "BrokeBack Mountain".

Now, I know that previews often don't tell you much about a movie, but this one really took the cake. If you watched this preview, you saw: Beautiful country, nice sunsets, handsome men on horses, good looking women with men kissing them in a bed, etc. There was NOTHING that might indicate to you the controversial nature of the movie. I thought it was intentionally misleading, the way it was constructed.

I realized, the people who are hyping this movie (and the hype was first and foremost in the preview..."Highly Acclaimed...Best Picture...", etc.) are in the same position that liberals are with respect to their politics.

They cannot let people know the true nature of the film, the way liberal politicians cannot let their constituents know the true nature of their politics. As Richard Nixon once said about Alger Hiss: "If the American people knew the real nature of Alger Hiss, they would boil him in oil...", so would a large percentage of Americans who vote for liberal politicians without understanding their true nature.

And so it is with this film. I can easily see some people going to see it based on the preview, and being unpleasantly surprised. But perhaps not, I suppose one would need to live under a rock to be surprised.

Jay Severin, a libertarian/conservative radio talk show host in the Massachusetts area (yes...as strange as that sounds) put it best when he said that this part of a concerted effort by hollywood liberals to deconstruct America, take everything about it that is good, and corrupt or destroy it. He said (and I agree) the message it sends is "This is perfectly normal and common behavior amongst cowboys..." There is a lot to quibble about in this general statement, they are not cowboys, this is not portrayed as normal, etc. But I do not think the substance of what Mr. Severin said is wrong. When one looks at the hype of this homosexual movie, and where it comes from, I agree with him.

I would say this is a "stealth" rump-ranger movie. Not getting very good returns in the box office so now they are going to have to soft sell it to the innocent. Small town America is better informed. Movie has had it!!!

Agreed, they're desperate. I'm seeing the ads all the time. And they are misleading.

This movie is filthy propaganda. Thats not hyperbole. I just love the ads with Anne Hathway (from "Princess Diaries") holding a baby. Its so dishonest.

As with most other liberal causes, the light of day is death to their projects. The American people dont vote 70-80% for anti gay marriage amendments for no reason.

Hollywood is trying to convince America that sex between men who share a lot of time and camaraderie is not an uncommon thing. Should this movie recieve any recognition, a movie with male frontline soldiers having sex in the field with each other will follow. You can bet on it.

The people at work I talked to over the last couple of weeks had heard of the film but had no idea of the contents. Needless to say, after hearing, it was their "smile" for the day. No one has any interest in spending their money to see it.

This movie is from are the same people who could not tolerate Mel gibson's Passion, and now try to ram "the book of daniel" heretical feces onto our screens.

Homosexual activity is wrong. Homosexual "love" is nothing more than submission to the basest perverted mechanizations. It is a complete defilement of God's intentions, for sexual conduct, and human relationships. It is anathema to Christians, and accurately reflects the lowly slimes, in the production of this crap.

I do not understand why homosexual activity has developed into a "protected lifestyle"? In reality, there are probably less than ONE (1%) queers among us. But, they have the power of Democrat panderers and their 'Pubbie cohorts behind them (sic)...

Where are our legions?

My take: Hollywood is attempting to destroy traditional American heroes and icons. The American cowboy exemplifies the independent, manly spirit of America. Can't have that in a "kinder, gentler, manicured and powdered" America.

What's ironic about Cornhole Mountain is that homos are being used to trash the cowboy image, and the homo lobby in America is cheering them on.

The movie will bomb with older, more sophisticated people, but young kids will be drawn to it (especially teenage girls) because they love Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie is propaganda, to make young folks more "tolerant".

Good point about the "stealth" nature of liberalism! That's why Democrats can't win - either they're honest and America rejects them, or they try to straddle the fence and are rightly perceived as insincere and deceptive.

This film will NOT do well at the box office (and who will ever know whether anyone just bought blocs of tickets for empty seats), but I'd bet six months pay it will win best picture in all the awards - Golden Globe, Oscar, etc.

I had a terrible stomach virus and insomnia last night, and was flipping chennels. Bill Maher (ecch!!!) was on HBO. If you want to know what the leftist entertainment crowd REALLY thinks of us, watch that if you can stomach it. I forced myself to see a segment just to know what's out there. Disgusting.

I saw this book of Daniel crap on a trailer last night, What is that crap? Why does every new movie and TV show now have to have some queers in it?

I don't know that young women who idolize these stars will ever be able to see them the same way again. But I do worry about young folks and what they are being taught - America is racist, we torture prisoners and wiretap Americans, etc.

One ad I saw had a byline for the film, something like "love is a force of nature." In other words, people can't control their urges and have to do whatever feels good. Except, of course, if childrens' behavior conforms to traditionally understood sex roles. Then that behavior is not a "force of nature," but a result of the bad old American society and needs to be fought. Sheesh!

"...Should this movie receive any recognition, a movie with male frontline soldiers having sex in the field with each other will follow..."

Oh, God. I am going to hurl.

Hollywood is in such a black pit, as is the media. I picked up a paper yesterday, the Worcester Telegram (which is owned by the Boston Globe) and on their entertainment section had five movies they were reviewing, about:

1.) Gay sheepherders (cowboys they said)

2.) A Transvestite bar singer

3.) A woman who drinks a marijuana laced concoction

4.) Two men who get trapped in a grisly torture ring in Europe

5.) I cannot even remember what this one was after the first four.

These are the movies they felt compelled to discuss on their merits. Now, I am no prude, and I spend money on films. And I admit I like films like "American Beauty" and "Pulp Fiction" which are generally derided by most conservatives. But this was a bit much all at once. The coordinated attack is a bit transparent...

Similarly, the commercials for 'Million Dollar Baby' were also made to look like it was a female 'Rocky' movie.

How does that Al Franken saying go again, "The Lying Liars and the Lies They Tell"? Hollywood is committing suicide, unassisted.

I suppose one would need to live under a rock to be surprised.

That was gonna be my comment to you before I finished reading your post. Any savvy moviegoer knows what this is about.

And, quite frankly, anyone who spends $8-10 on a ticket and doesn't know what it's about can't blame anyone but themselves.
