Auds on a 'Mountain' high: 'Brokeback' beats out 'Bloodrayne,' 'Casanova'
Variety ^ | January 8, 2006 | Ben Fritz

Nothing is standing in the way of "Brokeback Mountain."

Expanding to 214 new playdates and more than 60 new markets, including numerous small cities in mountain, Midwestern, and southern states, Focus' cowboy love story averaged a still-strong $11,905 per theater.

Playing at 483 locations, weekend gross was $5.8 million, bringing the pic's cume to $22.5 million.

"Brokeback" came out ahead of several new pics on twice or four times as many playdates, including "Casanova," "Bloodrayne" and "Grandma's Boy."

Among the new markets where the critically acclaimed pic opened strong were Tulsa, El Paso, Des Moines and Lubbock, Tex.

Pic, which has been nominated for every major award thus far, also experienced its first flash of controversy as the Jordan Commons theater in suburban Salt Lake City reneged on a contract with Focus to play the pic. More information on reasons weren't available, though it appears to be over the film's same-sex romance.

With cities of every size in nearly every location doing well with "Brokeback," the next challenge is expanding further into the suburbs. Pic will likely expand to around 600 playdates by Friday and closer to 800 by Jan. 20.

"The film is maintaining its rock-solid consistency, and I think suburban markets are now ready for it," said Focus distribdistrib toppertopper Jack Foley.

Did Eaker tell ya about the first time he went skydiving ?

Seems he froze up at the door and didn't wanna jump, instructor whispered in his ear that he was gay and there was only one way Eaker would get out of jumping !

Whe we asked him if he jumped Eakers said .....a little at first !

I got it, I just debunked it.

Jumping out of a plane without a parachute would be preferable!!

(I would still want my backpack!)

It's not in profit yet - but it's headed there. As a general rule of thumb, 55% of gross is recouped by distributor. So @ $22.5 mil gross, that's about $12.4 to the distributor - just another $1.6 to break even.

If it wins awards, it will get additional playing time. The durn thang has already made more money than it ought to in a Christian country!

Assuming your percentage is correct, that would still mean about 4.5 million homosexuals, etc. If my other estimates are correct, it would still ensure gross receipts of $18 million, enough to get Brokeback Mountain near to breakeven status financially. Then heterosexual leftists and the curious will add to the totals.

The oh so sophisticated Europeans will love this drek especially when you add their fascination with Western cowboys (don't mention they are sheep herders!) Plus DVD sales will jack up total receipts

The sad part of this story is I also froze at the door and my male instructor whispered the say thing in my ear.

It was not a good day for Eaker.

That was actually stated on this board by a FReeper who claimed he witnessed it personally at a theatre complex he was at . HE, of course, didn't see BB, he just stuck his head in the one showing it after seeing the "sold out" sign, & claimed he only saw about 6 or 8 people. Can't tell you if it was true or not.

Many more people have already seen Cheaper By the Dozen 2 than have seen or will see BBM.

It'll be interesting to check back and see once both films have completed their run.
