U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy who ripped Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito for ties to a group that discriminates against women says hes going to quit a club notorious for discriminating against women as fast as I can.
Kennedy was outed by conservatives late last week as a current member of The Owl Club, a social club for Harvard alumni that bans women from membership.
In an interview with WHDH Channel 7s Andy Hiller that aired last night, Kennedy said, I joined when I . . . 52 years ago, I was a member of the Owl Club, which was basically a fraternal organization.
Asked by Hiller whether he is still a member, Kennedy said, Im not a member; I continue to pay about $100.
He then said of being a member in a club that discriminates against women, I shouldnt be and Im going to get out of it as fast as I can.
The Harvard Crimson reports that, in 1984, the university severed ties with clubs like the Owl, citing a federal law championed by Kennedy.
Meanwhile, Kennedy admitted to Hiller that he himself probably couldnt pass Judiciary Committee muster.
Probably not . . . probably not, Kennedy said.
The committee will vote on Alitos nomination on Jan. 24, and the full Senate will begin debate the next day. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said he looks forward to a fair up-or-down vote.
Notice the lies Kennedy tells during the interview
You don't understand. Democrats have multi-cameral minds and can hold hundreds of contradictory positions simultaneously. Witness John Kerry's many stances on every issue that he's ever talked about.
While this is not the top thing Kennedy can and should be criticized for, if you are going to question a nominee in a demeaning way and imply that the person is a racist and sexist because of membership in a group who opposed loosening the admittence standards for women and minorities, you better not be in a "men only" club yourself.
It's not the Owl Club that's the problem; it's the Canadian Club.

You are right. However, Kennedy used this issue in an attempt to discredit Alito. So he's fair game.
Incorrect. Mitt ran against Ted Kennedy in 1994. He has never run against Kerry.
Mitt Romney did run against Kennedy for senate.
Dear maro,
"To be fair, this is a club for undergraduates."
Yes, but my understanding is that it was a club one joined as an undergraduate, but to which one would belong for life. It was called a final (?) club, which implies to me that it was something one joined in anticipation of graduation, as part of one's post-graduate networking.
Apparently, according to what's been posted, he's been paying dues of $100 (per year?) since then for on-going membership.
That's not quite the same thing as having once belonged to Pi Delta Pi.

Bloated Whale Hypocrisy DING!
What he means is 'as fast as he can arange for the cameras to be there when he quits'.
The Democrats make a big deal when they find a Republican who owns property that has an old deed covenant (placed there by a former owner decades ago) forbidding its sale to Blacks or Jews. Those restrictions have long since been found to be illegal and therefore unenforceable, but unless the Republican goes to the trouble and expense of expunging them, he gets pilloried as some sort of bigot. This Kennedy membership is just payback on the same order. (Which I suppose sounds like, "he started it!", but I'm not above a little of that :-).
Doesn't the man realize that Ted is the Last Brother? Joe blew up. JFK and RFK have been canonized as Virgins and Martyrs by the Wholly Roamin' Democratic Catholic Church of Massachusetts and been granted their own beads on the Rosary of Good Democrats everywhere!
This Hiller! Who the Hell does he think he is? Of course, Ted cares about women! Did not he and Senator Dodd try and give mouth-to-mouth CPR to that poor waitress who was in convulsions on the floor of a Washington restaurant? This scurrilous Hiller fellow ought to try it on someone thrashing around like that.
Did not Ted dive repeatedly on that young woman who foolishly found herself at the bottom of Poucha Pond? Did he not spend 9 hours discussing how to save her after his heroic efforts were in vain? And him with the bad back! Tell him, " You try and find a cop when you need one, Hiller!"
Arcy, I thank you for posting this prejudiced article. Those of us who realize that Teddy does what he does out of love for us little people need to know who the enemy is... and we need to know before Happy Hour.
Let's see, 52 years ago this "public servant" was enjoying life in an elitist drinking club in the Ivy League; my dad was a poor farm kid who was actually serving the public-- in Korea-- and taking mortar fire that led to months of surgery and recovery. He use the GI money he recieved to finish college and become a much-loved pediatrician.
Yet it's men like Kennedy who become heroes to the Left.
***It's not the Owl Club that's the problem; it's the Canadian Club.***
LMAO!
Please join me in condemning the dastardly attack upon our Ted, scion of America's royalty, the Kennedys.
Mitt ran against Kennedy in 1994, IIRC.
I got confused with another governor. It was William Weld that I was thinking of who ran against Kerry.
I believe he updated his contact info with the club as recently as September, 2005, as stated by this atricle.
So the 'forgot about it' claim is nonsense.
