Rev. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., the president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, says it's "an absolute revolt against God's design" if husbands and wives purposely avoid bearing children.
On his Web site and other articles and interviews, Mohler argues that "marriage, sex and children are part of one package" and that "to deny any part of this wholeness is to reject God's intention in creation and his mandate revealed in the Bible."
In a CNN interview, the Baptist leader added, “We grow up by having children. Without that responsibility, we have a generation of perpetual adolescents just growing old."
Because I'm interested in anyone (religious, governmental) who tries to make public policy about people's personal lives.

Is it "liberal" to say that the individual should make individual choices? I never thought so before.
I come from the most (well ALMOST most) fundamental of independent Baptist backgrounds. The one thing we learned was that not ALL are called to be married.
All I can think of that he's saying is that he feels that many are called to be married - but would rather stay single for selfish reasons.
I'm Southern Baptist and this isn't the first time he's made these remarks. I participate on Crosswalk forum where Mohler's blog is and it was discussed thoroughly when he said that deliberate singlelness was sin.
There are many reasons that are not listed as to why people don't get married at 17-18 today and the reasons why are not sin. Mohler still paints with a broad brush and alienates the very one's he is trying to reach.
...count me as agreeing with Mr Mohler.

Or if the woman you're supposed to marry decides all of a sudden she feels the need to try and get back with her ex. The same ex who abandoned her when she refused to get an abortion for the pregnancy he caused, never paid a dime to her to help care for his child, then became and alcoholic. Of course, when said unstable and heartless woman forgives that, spends a grand total of 12 days with him, all while professing her continuing love for someone else (read: me) then after those 12 days, marries him, thereby stomping a mudhole in my heart, maybe, just maybe children aren't such a good idea.
Yes, I am bitter, and yes, I know I should consider myself lucky that it happened now as opposed to later, but it's just not that easy. Not when everything you've been looking for for 30 years is found in this woman, who then proceeds to do the above. My year has sucked thus far.
Been bottling this up for days now.

This is a case where I can most definitely agree with the addage: "Hate the sin, love the sinner". I'd be happy with the "Love the Sinner" as a standalone statement as it pertains to couples that wish to remain childless.
My heart goes out to you... there are some really stupid and heartless people in the world.. and they should never procreate..

The thing I just realized is that this whole discussion apparently took place in 2004 ... which was not indicated in the original article that WKB posted. The site seemed to lead us to believe these are current comments - also obviously the CNN piece did not go into the full text - but focused of course on the "controversial" soundbite.
In his reply he says he does NOT advocate high school kids marrying - nor does he believe that people should marry just for the sake of marrying - but rather seek wise counsel. (Which IS biblical - just can't think of the verses)
From what I can tell his viewpoint is not different than my own - or from that which I was taught. My only concern is that he doesn't use verses to back things up.. But frankly it's not something that I'm worked up about - so I probaby won't dig it all up..
He's talking to believers - those who are Christian's by rebirth (from what I can tell). Those believers who challenge what he says should do so using scripture - just as he should be using scripture to back it up.. ,-)
Not saying whether you should or should not have children, but personally speaking, a surprise pregnancy at the age of 41 (after 13 years of secondary infertility) taught me that God can and does help His children.
I was very afraid about the money situation, but the Lord provided all we needed.
I think of my great Uncle often. He was a wonderful person.
Keep in mind that this man is speaking to Christians. And Baptists.
I am Christian, but not Baptist (and most certainly not Southern Baptist!), so it's nice to know I'm off the hook. :)
