Portsmouth Shipyard to Have Three Carriers at Once
AP ^ | 22 Jan 2006

The Norfolk Naval Shipyard, which typically handles just one aircraft carrier at a time, will be home to three carriers at once this fall, said Navy Capt. Joseph Campbell, the yard's commanding officer.

The three carriers make up one-quarter of the nation's flattop fleet and are scheduled to be in the yard simultaneously for several weeks.

The USS Harry S. Truman arrived at the yard Jan. 9. It will be joined by the USS Theodore Roosevelt in September and the USS George Washington in October. The Truman is scheduled to depart in November.

No kidding, it is a zoo there with only one carrier. I Can't imagine what it will be like. Glad I don't have to deal with that mess.

Yep in 80 they had two one was us and we were in the drydock. Portsmouth is not a fun place from the times I remember. That's why during overhaul I rented a place with a Bosun in Oceanview.

Good shot in the arm for the local merchants during the time the ships are in port.

Hooters should do a box-office business.

Right on. A lot of FReepers are quite a bit paranoid. LOOK OUT! THE TERRISTS GONNA ATTAQ THE CARRIERS! Islamic Murderers normally don't target the military, they attack civilians. They can't beat the military. They can beat public opinion.

Have you ever been to Norfolk? If you have you know the concerns and it isn't just the carriers. It's a logistical nightmare land defense wise. Think about this and this doesn't violate loose lips policies. Straight across the river from Norfolk is the sole ship building company in the United States left that is capable of producing even a conventional aircraft carrier.

Isn't the Carl Vinson in RCOH at Newport News?

If my count is correct, that would mean that the Eisenhower and the Kennedy would be the only two ships available for the Atlantic and Med.

Except, wasn't the Kennedy tagged for early retirement before then? Will it even be in service at that point?

Rumor has it that the salvaged metals are going to be sold to China in which they plan to build up their arsonal.

Do some history on the company and I bet you find they are a faux American company you can trace to Indonesia.

That is all I can share.

This many carriers in one place is a very tempting target.

Some raghead in an ultra light gonna kamakazi onto the carrier deck?

That is exactly correct. Nevertheless, a nuke going off near would not only cause horrendous civilian casualties but take out 3 carrier battle groups. On the surface, it sure is a risk we, for example, wouldn't have taken during cold war.

On the other hand, this implies to me that they don't consider terrorst threat high enough to be concerned about the carriers. I'm sure the bigger problem is how to entertain all the crews.

If the terrorists had a nuke they'd have used it by now.

Sorry all I was thinking of the salvage of the Moth ball fleet.

They have them ready although to tear the fleet up and then do what I posted up above.

It is a private salvage Company not the US Military that will be scrapping the fleet out.

>>>I'd love to see those three flattops together.<<<

San Diego regularly has two CV's tied up at Coranado Island naval base - and I think I have seen three at one time on occasion.

Any San Diego Freeper types out there - do I remember rightly?

Shouldn't we have some of these ships stationed around hotspots... Or Maybe we have some in hotspots now and just have a few extras, just in case?

I agree completely. And, we will probably need at least one of these carriers when the balloon goes up --probably in the fall --with IRAN.

Tho other naval assets needed for the strike package can be garnered from re-adjusting/extending current deployment/upkeep schedules.

This is not idle chat. I suspect the gauntlet will be thrown sometime this summer. We cannot let Iran nuke up !!
