Tour guide trussell

Here we are again. This leg of the Mesa Verde tour will focus on the Cliff Palace - Balcony House Loop. This is a 6 mile loop road

We will start with Cliff Palace. This is the largest ruin in Mesa Verde, and also the largest ever discovered and excavated ruin in Northern America. The parking area is about 1/4 mile walk from the top of the mesa. The tour begins on the left side of this picture, you walk down 100 feet of stone steps that are notched out of the mountain rock. Be careful, they are not even or level...and there isn't anything to grab onto if you trip!

When we get to the bottom of the steps, we will walk about 1/8 mile before we get to the ruin. All of the ruins of Mesa Verde were built in a way that maximized natures ability to serve mankind. They faced the sun in the morning, and had shade in the afternoon. There is one exception...we will talk about that one later. :)

This ruin has 23 kivas and 217 rooms. If you remember from last time, a Kiva is a round, underground room that is used only by the men and older boys.

Read about Mesa Verde and surrounding area Here: Mesa Verde Country

This is a different link than the one I posted last time. If you request brochures from here, please tell them Tracy sent you. :)

As you can see...you get to walk right up to the walls of the ruin. Try to remember not to touch the walls too much...the oils from our skin will cause the stone to turn black.

This area is under the alcove, and not one where we are allowed to go. Isn't it mysterious looking?

See the tall square tower with the blackened outer wall? We get to look inside that room. The black is caused by the oils from the hands of visitors as I mentioned earlier.

Lets get a little closer, then we can take a turn looking inside.

Be sure to look up...the view is really beautiful!

This art work is original! The wood is part of the floor between levels. These rooms are very small.

And here we are at the exit. There are 3 eight foot ladders to climb up. Take your time...we're in no hurry. This picture is 3D...if you have 3D glasses, check it out.

Let's move on to Balcony House.

Balcony House Ruin is the most mysterious ruin in the park. It was built on the opposite side of the canyon from the other ruins. (This is the exception I mentioned earlier). In the day the Anasazi lived here, it was only accessible by crawling on hands and knees, single file, through a twelve foot long tunnel. This leads us to believe they may have been experiencing conflict and needed to be better protected from outsiders. That tunnel is still used in the tours.

We begin at the top of the mesa...walk down 120 feet of stone steps notched out of the mountain rock, and then come to this ladder.

This ladder is 32 foot high. It is bolted to the side of the mountain, so don't worry about it falling.

When you get to the top, please wait for the rest of the group. If the ladder is hot, face your palms to you and grip the back of the ladder.

Last year, we had one of our Tour guides fall from the balcony. He landed in some brush, so he wasn't hurt. He got out of the brush, climbed back up the ladder and finished his tour.

We go through this doorway, and will be on the first side of Balcony House Ruin.

This is the full view of Balcony house. The ladder we just climbed up is on the right side, the exit is to the left. You can see the parking area above the ruin. Notice the dividing wall in the middle of the ruin?

That large rock slab that is leaning against the mountain is the outer wall of the 12 foot long tunnel, and just the other side of that are two 20 foot ladders and 20 foot of mountain rock that has to be traversed to get out of the ruin.

The construction of this retaining wall never ceases to amaze me.

This is one of the balconies that contributed to the name of the ruin. We will now go to the back of the ruin, and come out on the other side of the divider wall.

Here you see the two kivas of Balcony House.

That long pole is believed to have something to do with alerting the Anasazi to the coming of the winter solstice.

Here is another angle of that same pole. Looking back the way we just come from.

BLAST FROM THE PAST!!

HIDDEN TREASURES

There are at least 2, and possibly 3, separate levels of dwellings here. Can you spot them?

Magnifying Our Master

Read:
2 Corinthians 11:23-28

I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. —2 Timothy 4:6

Bible In One Year: Exodus 14-15; Matthew 17

cover As a man of unwavering steadfastness, the apostle Paul had a fixed ambition. He spelled it out in his letter to the Philippians: "Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death" (1:20).

No matter what Paul might be called upon to suffer, no matter what hardships he might undergo, he was determined that his life would be a means of magnifying Jesus. And without flinching, he held tight to that determination through peril, pain, and imprisonment, and even willingly offered his body as a sacrifice.

Some of us may not be able to see how Jesus could be magnified in our bodies. We may think that it can be done only during times of persecution for our faith. But that is not the case.

Our hands can magnify the Lord as we write letters of encouragement. Our feet can magnify Him as we go on simple errands of helpfulness. Our voices can magnify Him as we give our testimony and sing His praises. Our hearts can magnify Him as we express in prayer our love for the redeeming Christ. Our ears can magnify Him as we gratefully listen to sermons exalting His grace.

If we know Jesus, we can lift Him up to others in our daily lives. —Vernon Grounds

Take my will and make it Thine—
It shall be no longer mine;
Take my heart—it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne. —Havergal

You are one of a kind—designed to glorify God as only you can.
