Employees at Ford's Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Mich., will have to drive Ford Motor Co. vehicles to work or park across the street, the plant manager announced earlier this week.
The new parking policy, which is scheduled to take effect Feb. 1, was instituted by plant manager Rob Webber just as Ford reported losses of $1.6 billion from its North American auto operations in 2005 and Monday announced plans to close 14 plants and cut 30,000 jobs as it tries to reverse losses and respond to declining U.S. market share.

Just plain dumb is right.
I drive a domestic vehicle (a Jeep), but I'm awfully tempted to go foreign next time. Ford needs to start building quality, reasonably priced vehicles. Until then, all these stupid little stunts won't accomplish anything.
LOL. Nobody who works where a product is being made wants to have one.
So Ford is saying that even with the employee discount,
people don't want their product?
And Ford is saying that rather than fix this, they think
the solution is pointless symbolic policy changes?
Won't stick, but dumb move nonetheless.

Lame. No wonder the company is practically bankrupt. Management is stupid. Have they considered that even their employees don't like Fords? Maybe they should ask them why.
As a result of my nightmarish experience of driving/owning a Ford I do drive a foreign car, and will continue to do so. I will never buy a Ford product again.
When I was a kid a GM worker lived down the street, he drove only Fords.
How about making a car worth buying? Bueller? Anyone?

Do you think GM or Ford would be in the position they are now if they were smart? This simply fits the pattern. Ford announced they're going big into hybrids. Do you think there's a reason the Japanese have just toyed with it, and only made small cars? The technology is niche technology. If you base your lineup on it, you'll get squashed.
Ford dropped the line about a "better idea" a long time ago, with good reason.
Probably have companies close by that need parking space.
Up our profits by renting parking space in our company parking lot (which is now empty).
I tried to apply at the F-150 Plant here in Norfolk. I drove a 86 Pontiac LeMans.. Made by Daewoo of Korea...to the gate to park. The Gate gumby, told me I had to park my POS - yes, he said that... in the parking lot on the other side of the lots. a good 3/4 mile hike. I turned around and never returned...
I drive a foreign car that was built in the United States by United States citizens. Those same US citizens voted down attempts to unionize many times because the union couldn't provide them any benefits that they weren't already getting from the company. Sure, company headquarters is in Japan. But the guys down the street are getting paid.
But something else to consider ---- the employees by choosing not to purchase a product made by their employer, could be contributing to the downfall of their employer too.
I'm NOT saying that any employee HAS to buy their own product, but it's interesting that they don't consider that in their purchases.
Hope I explained my thoughts completely, I'm not looking to get flamed. People certainly have the right to buy what they want, but they should at least think about it long term.
