Teen Says Teacher Made Him Sit on Floor(for wearing broncos football jersey)

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - A 17-year-old high school student said he was humiliated when a teacher made him sit on the floor during a midterm exam in his ethnicity class _ for wearing a Denver Broncos jersey.

The teacher, John Kelly, forced Joshua Vannoy to sit on the floor and take the test Friday _ two days before the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Broncos 34-17 in the AFC championship game. Kelly also made other students throw crumpled up paper at Vannoy, whom he called a "stinking Denver fan," Vannoy told The Associated Press on Monday.

Kelly said Vannoy, a junior at Beaver Area Senior High School, just didn't get the joke.

"If he felt uncomfortable, then that's a lesson; that's what (the class) is designed to do," Kelly told The Denver Post. "It was silly fun. I can't believe he was upset."

Vannoy was wearing a No. 7 Broncos jersey on Friday, because he is a fan of John Elway, the Broncos' retired Hall of Fame quarterback.

Vannoy said he was so unnerved he left at least 20 questions blank on the 60-question test, and just wants out of Kelly's class because he's afraid the teacher won't treat him fairly now that the story reached the media.

"I'm going to have to deal with him for two more nine weeks (school quarters) and he's going to want revenge somehow," Vannoy said Monday. "I took the test. I'm shaking. I'm furious. I didn't know what to do."

Kelly, who wore a Ben Roethlisberger jersey Friday, and his principal, Thomas Karczewski, didn't immediately return messages left on their school voice mail Monday.

Big Beaver Falls Area School District Superintendent Donna Nugent said she was aware of the situation, but said confidentiality rules prevent her from commenting specifically.

"We'll take whatever action we need to in order for the student to feel comfortable," Nugent said.

"Ethnicity class" - I'm guessing that the intent of the class is to make all of the white kids feel guilty and experience what this freak of a teacher thinks non whites feel.

Ka-ching! we have a winner. You are the first person here ar Liberal Republic to state that - most people too busy defending the "change agent" teacher.

I'm with you - the teacher is a moron. The kid seems to be a simp that may have found a way to get out of a bad grade for lack of preparation for the test. I would have had fun with it if one of my teahcers had reacted similarly.

We do take our football seriously. So do a lot of other Americans. Some on here defend the kid only because the Steelers might have beat their team during the reg. season or playoffs. It may seem trivial, but a pro sports team gives a city a lot of it's identity. The same people who chastise the teacher would not chastise the people who would object to a person bringing an Iranian flag to a pro-USA rally.
The kid was obviously looking to stir the pot a little. When he got the reaction he was looking for he couldn't handle it.

I always thought the "forward fumble" rule dated back to the Oakland Raiders and Kenny Stabler, fumbling the ball forward to defeat the Miami Dolphins in a playoff game.

It was the Immaculate Deception aka the Holy Roller against the San Diego Chargers in a regular season game.

most people too busy defending the "change agent" teacher.

But the teacher doesn't want his actions defended in the context of the class. He wants to be vilified for mistreating the twit kid to show how certain ethnic groups feel mistreated. His lesson plan backfires here on FR.

I'm glad I wasn't in his class.

Nobody ever makes me get on the floor!

The NFL's 2006 season is going to be grand! Games on Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights plus the usual Sunday card. This could hammer the bar and restaurant business but I don't really care. I've got my La-Z-Boy and my Sony LCD all set for some serious "cooping." Gosh, when is it going to be September? (No sarcasm here, seriously.)

I have a cousin who was an offensive lineman for the Dallas Cowboys for 7 years. I live in Pittsburgh. No one in my family, myself included, has ever worn a Dallas Cowboys jersey.

Stupid. This is an ethics class and was meant to teach him how other people would feel if mocked. It was done in jest and he's an idiotic if he thinks it was serious.

I don't support an ethics class but that's what it would be for.

"Wearing number 7 was self-humiliation."

This has to be one of the most ignorant statements I've ever seen on FR.

And I'm a Browns fan ... and I lived in Denver from 84-00 ... and I endured the torture of watching the Broncos beat up the Browns in 3 AFC Championship games ... but it felt better knowing the Browns were beaten by one of the greatest QB's who ever played the game. Even I was thrilled watching "The Drive."

When the Browns became the Ravens I rooted for the Broncos and watched Elway win them two Super Bowls. I would say Elway was the 2nd greatest QB of all time, next to Joe Montana.

It's meant to teach the majority of the class the benefit of conforming with authority and pick on the designated scapegost
