THE ISSUE: Sen. Ted Kennedy's membership in Harvard's all-male Owl Club. Picking on the ponderous Sen. Ted Kennedy is like picking only the low-hanging fruit — it's too easy......

*** ....when he first ran for the Senate, Kennedy's opponent said, "If your name was Edward Moore, instead of Edward Moore Kennedy, your candidacy would be a joke"........ the joke has been on us. Paul Bloustein Cincinnati, Ohio

*** The person responsible (for Teddy's dog Splash's name) may well be Ted's old friend and occasional nemesis — John Barleycorn. James Ring Ossining

*** Now that he's become a leading anti-Republican attack dog, positioning himself as Washington's leading arbiter of truth and integrity..... It's time to say the name "Mary Jo Kopechne" out loud. Bill Morin Vernon, Conn.

Amen. It's like the elephant in the room that everyone's ignoring. After drunKennedy's "performance" in the hearings, all bets should be off. The hypocrisy of him to try to make an issue of Alito's membership decades ago in a college club, when Kennedy was even then a dues-paying member of a me's-only club. Not that "I" have a problem with that-drunKennedy was the one who wanted to make it an issue. Why do Republicans let him get away with the most scurrilous attacks,no holds barred,on conservative figures, and give him a pass on Mary Jo Kopechne?

The inescapable fact that he killed a girl should be brought up every time he opens his mouth, especially on the floor of the Senate.

"me's=men's"--although in drunKennedy's case,an argument could be made for the former. He could certainly constitute a club all by himself-a drinking club of one.

Welcome to Drunk Old Murderer Island-population drunKennedy.

And a majority of MA voters are still dupes and boobs, unless they're something worse,to keep inflicting this stain on the Senate,on the rest of the nation.Over and over.

Kennedy, more than anyone else, is responsible for

changing our immigration laws in the 60's IIRC.

Speaking of low-hanging fruit.

What I wouldn't give to see someone get in this slob's face on the Senate floor.

MJK was just collateral damage for EMK. Nothing more; nothing less. She was expendible. He was a Kennedy. Period.

Thank you,I despise drunKennedy so badly that momentarily forgot about sKerry. What IS it with some MA voters anyway? sKerry's bad enough, but at least he's not a murderer. How can they reward drunKennedy over and over for cold-blooded murder? He walked away and let that girl drown, and did NOTHING to try to save her. He's lucky she wasn't my daughter.

There was a conflict on what time the accident had occurred. A sheriff said he had seen Kennedy’s car hours after Kennedy said the accident occurred. The senator said he based his estimate on the clock of the rented car he was driving. When it was determined the car didn’t have a clock, Kennedy changed his story.

Ping.

The two most influential groups around Boston and in Massachusetts generally are the old white Protestant families, commonly called Boston Brahmins, and the Irish, formerly laborers and maids of the Brahmins.

The Brahmins controlled everything until the Irish multiplied and got themselves into office. They were typically represented by the great Mayor Curley, James Michael Curley, one of the first of the corrupt Irish machine politicians in Boston.

I think the Irish got tired of being discriminated against and figured it was better to stick together and support the machine. A little corruption was OK as long as it was the Irish doing it and taking care of their friends. Other ethnics fell into line because they lacked the numbers to do it themselves and still resented the Brahmins.

Some of that attitude probably still lingers. Plus now many of the white Protestants are liberals, willing to vote Democrat no matter what. These two groups give Kennedy a solid base of support no matter what he does.

I've wondered from time to time why senator after senator, over all these years, has not ever called him out.He gets more and more brazen, the more he gets away with it. Do they have to sign an oath in blood or something, when they're sworn in as senators, that they'll never mention drunKennedy's murderous drunken history?
