The cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain" led the Academy Awards field Tuesday with eight nominations, among them best picture and honors for actor Heath Ledger and director Ang Lee.
Also nominated for best picture were the Truman Capote story "Capote"; the ensemble drama "Crash"; the Edward R. Murrow chronicle "Good Night, and Good Luck"; and the assassination thriller "Munich."
The Johnny Cash biography, "Walk the Line," considered a likely best picture nominee, was shut out, though Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon earned acting nominations for the film.
George Clooney picked up two nominations, as supporting actor for his role as a steadfast CIA undercover agent in "Syriana" and best director for his Edward R. Murrow tale "Good Night, and Good Luck."
Along with best-actor contender Ledger, and directing nominee Lee, "Brokeback Mountain" scored nominations for Michelle Williams as supporting actress, Jake Gyllenhaal as supporting actor and Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for their screenplay adaptation of Annie Proulx's short story.
Yes, exactly. When John Wayne was at his box office peak (was that last week, by the way?), tickets to theatres were merely about a dollar or so, even less in some areas.
Those charts...irrelevant UNLESS someone takes the time to compute percentages of population numbers exponentially greater each year and per ticket price to each title.
The gays had their chance for an Oscar when DELIVERANCE came out. I'm sure they like that movie. Scared the beegees out of me.
Good idea...give me about fifteen minutes...I'll return.
Gee....is anyone really surprised?
Actually -they were the left people -the far left morally devoid people that 'feel' many things... Much like you; troll...
"How about a poke, Woodrow?"
I don't recall McMurty writing *that* line into `Lonesome Dove'

What is rational about perversion?
What is rational about Steve & Larry walking down the aisle, one dressed in a wedding gown?
What is rational about a lifestyle that include male pedofiles?
What is rational about a lifestyle that has a high probablity of AIDS?
What is rational about Heather having 2 mommies or Joey having 2 daddies?
What is rational about not being able to reproduce except by a turkey baster?
What is rational about what God calls sin?
Just ignore him/her/it. Don't let them set the agenda. They always try and people let them get away with it. Keep it professional and steer clear of talk on politics or religion or sex because you know he'll say he was offended and try to sue somebody.
Boxofficemojo.com does factor in inflation.
LOL
???Do you know why gay cowboys use ribbed condems???
Better traction in the mud!
LOL Everyone, if you are going to watch the Oscars which I am not, be sure to watch on an empty stomach.
This reminds me of the year the grammy went to Cristopher Cross for "Sailing". It was considered a low point in the music industry. And then there is Arrafat winning the nobel peace prize.
So if Brokeback wins, it can join the ranks of other losers who's main contribution to western culture is to destroy the credibility of the award they receive.
OK, so basically, Johnny Cash's story isn't good enough, but we have gay adulterers, transgendered freaks, terrorists and suicide bombers. Are we missing anything here?
>>>I haven't see the Johnny Cash move; but, if Joaquin Phoenix's performance was half a good as his part in The Gladiator, he should have a least received a nomination. His portrayal of Commodus was so believable, I still hate him. ;-)
>>>
I was amazed to find out this was River Phoenix's brother. I never knew that. Their sister skipped the good looks gene. Poor thing.
Ben Johnson well his well-deserved Oscar for playing Sam the Lion in The Last Picture Show, which was also written by Larry McMurty.
LOL
That about sums it up...
Yes, but "American Beauty" was the beginning of the end.
BM is truly the end of the Oscars.
Sad.
.... patriotism, morality and humanity.
