LIVE THREAD: SJC hearing on the NSA surveilance program - C-span 1; 9:30 am EST

Posted on 02/06/2006 6:08:53 AM PST by ken5050

Good Monday morning, once again, fellow political jinkies. The NFL season may be over, but the political season inside the Beltway is 24/7/365. So join us, if you can, as those wacky Dems on the Senate Judiciary committee reprise their pitiful efforts to once again smear President Bush and score political points..

I'm with you 100% .... have the families not sue the city and her?

On another note, I'm EXTREMELY impressed with Gonzalez' stunning composure under vicious and slanderous interrogation today. Don't know how these people do it.

Many years ago before I had Fox News Channel, I was a faithful listener to c-span,and after i got FNC I listened less and less because it was changing before my eyes. People would tell me the crap going on and one day after not watching it for months I watched about two hours and could not believe what they had done to something that I used to swear by when I was Fox and decent news deprived. It is nothing like it used to be and the dems you hear on there on the call in are the craziest you will ever hear anywhere. They make Cindy Sheehan (the Grief Slut) sound sane.

I turned off as the first caller called in on the Republican line and was a "program caller"..would not answer if he was a Republican..and had not seen the hearings.

#####

So typical. I think I was away from the TV for that one. That would bring the score down to 11 anti-Bush to 1 pro-Bush for this segment.

OK....I can respect that...LOL

Regarding the hearing....from the dems it was just blah, blah, blah, more of the same...

I have been having a running "discussion" with Cboldt this evening over Specter's final statement.

I FEEL that Specter was really over the top in wanting Bush to have to get THEIR permission and acted SHOCKED, that the AUMF which DID give him permission to use all force, foreign AND DOMESTIC...

actually was used by Bush in that way...

If you get time...read about the last 150 or so posts...you will get a sort of idea of what I mean...

BUT, they will repeat this tonight...if you aren't to "worn out" to watch...(wink, wink).

Hey friend....I forgot to include your name in post #2485...sorry.

BTW...I was just watching Hairball..and Chrissy had on Ben Ginsburg and some dem dolt....and he doesn't even try anymore to act like he is concerned about the country more than getting rid of Bush...

He was discussing today's hearing...and he turned to the dem dolt and said "I thought one great TACTIC that the dems used was bringing up former Attorneys General like Ashcroft to testify"....

IOW...this IS a gotcha hearing..NOT a hearing to find out information and "help" like Durbin keeps asserting...otherwise they wouldn't need a TACTIC.

Also welcomes Debra Burlingame here; she's been here all day and her brother died on 9/11

Oh, puh-leeze. Extending credibility to someone just because they lost a loved one is idiotic -- have we learned nothing from the Sheehan circus?

JUNE 1971 : (NY TIMES PUBLISHES STOLEN DEFENSE DEPARTMENT DOCUMENTS AS THE "PENTAGON PAPERS" - See MORTON HALPERIN, LESLIE GELB, DANIEL ELLSBURG, LYNDON B JOHNSON) Halperin has a long and controversial track record in the world of Washington intrigue, dating back to the Johnson Administration. Journalists sympathetic to Halperin’s leftwing sentiments give him high marks for blowing the whistle on the Vietnam War, but his activism helped undermine America’s war effort and contributed to the Communist victory.
The Johnson Defense Department placed Halperin in charge of compiling a secret history of U.S. involvement in Vietnam, based on classified documents. This secret history later emerged into public view as the so-called “Pentagon Papers.” Halperin and his deputy Leslie Gelb assigned much of the writing to leftwing opponents of the war, such as Daniel Ellsberg who, despite his background as a former Marine and a military analyst for the Rand Corporation, was already evolving into a New Left radical. In his memoir, Secrets, Ellsberg admits to concluding, as early as 1967, that, “we were not fighting on the wrong side; we were the wrong side” in the Vietnam War. [11] [[11] Daniel Ellsberg, Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers (New York: Viking, 2002) ]
Evidently Ellsberg had come to view Ho Chi Minh’s Communist regime as the wave of the future.
With Halperin’s tacit encouragement – and perhaps active collusion – Ellsberg stole the secret history and released  it to The New York Times, which published the documents as “The Pentagon Papers” in June 1971.[12][[12] Ellsberg, Secrets, 2002; Seymour M. Hersh, “Kissinger and Nixon in the White House,” The Atlantic, May 1982 ]
This was a violation of the Espionage Act, which forbids the removal of classified documents from government buildings. Not surprisingly, “The Pentagon Papers” echoed Halperin’s long-standing position that the Vietnam War was unwinnable, and ridiculed Presidents Kennedy and Johnson for stubbornly refusing to heed those of their advisors who shared this opinion. It marked a turning point in America’s failed effort to keep Indo-China from falling to the Communists. The government dropped its case against Ellsberg as Nixon’s power collapsed during the Watergate intrigues. --- "The Shadow Party: Part I," by David Horowitz and Richard Poe, FrontPageMagazine.com, 10/06/04

1970s : (CLINTON, STROBE TALBOT & MORTON HALPERIN ARE ADMITTED ENTRY INTO THE USSR) Bill Clinton-[future] President, Strobe Talbot-[future] Deputy Secretary of State, Morton Halperin- [future] State Director of Policy Planning, were all welcomed into the Soviet Union (when nobody else could get in) back during their Oxford days, and squired around by the KGB. Not exactly my idea of a vacation break from studies--the Soviet Union in the dead of winter. So here begins the sordid story of the destruction of this country by one of it's most popular and hated presidents and his evil anti-American cadre. 1976 : (MORTON H HALPERIN RAILS AGAINST THE US INTELLIGENCE SERVICES) “Using secret intelligence agencies to defend a constitutional republic is akin to the ancient medical practice of  employing leeches to take blood from feverish patients. The intent is therapeutic, but in the long run the cure is  more deadly than the disease,” Halperin wrote in his 1976 book, The Lawless State: The Crimes of the U.S. Intelligence  Agencies.[14] ...--- "The Shadow Party: Part I," by David Horowitz and Richard Poe, FrontPageMagazine.com, 10/06/04

(* My Note: Halperin would later go on to work for George Soros)

1984 - 1992 : (MORTON H HALPERIN IS DIRECTOR OF THE ACLU & HEAD OF ITS "NATIONAL SECURITY ARCHIVES") Halperin went on to become the director of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1984 to 1992 and head of its "National Security Archives." From this position, he waged open war against U.S.intelligence services, through the courts and the press, seeking to strip the government of virtually any power to investigate, monitor or obstruct subversive elements and their activities.[13] It did not take long for Halperin to go the next logical step and argue for abolishing America’s intelligence  services altogether....--- "The Shadow Party: Part I," by David Horowitz and Richard Poe, FrontPageMagazine.com, 10/06/04

MARCH 21, 1987 : (THE NATION ARTICLE : ACLU's MORTON H. HALPERIN VILLIFIES THE US & CALLS FOR ABOLISHMENT OF US INTELLIGENCE SERVICES)   In a March 21, 1987 article in The Nation, Halperin expanded on this theme [arguing for the abolishing of the US's intelligence services] and, like Ellsberg, took the position that America was the real villain in the Cold War. He wrote, “Secrecy does not serve national security. Covert operations are incompatible with constitutional  government and should be abolished.”[15] This was a call for unilateral disarming of our intelligence services to match the universal disarmament of our military which has long been a staple of the radical agenda. --- "The Shadow Party: Part I," by David Horowitz and Richard Poe, FrontPageMagazine.com, 10/06/04

1998 : (MORTON HALPERIN BECOMES DIRECTOR OF POLICY FOR THE US STATE DEPT) In 1998, Halperin became director of policy planning for the U.S. State Department. During his tenure 15 State Department laptop computers containing highly classified intelligence information disappeared. . ----- Lowell Ponte, "The ABC's of Media Bias"

MAY 11, 2000 : (REPORT : MORTON HALPERIN/MISSING STATE DEPT LAPTOP) For more years than one can imagine, the cabal of communists in academia have been plotting and planning the complete destruction of the United States. Morton Halperin has just popped up in the news in regards to a missing laptop at the State Department ( or two, or three, or, as is always the case with this administration, likely more), so we take this timely opportunity to reveal his past, present and future. ----- FULL ARTICLE - "THE EVIL WITHIN: CLINTON'S COMMUNIST CADRE ," by Barbara Stanley , etherzone, 05-11-2000

FEBRUARY 2002 : (GEORGE SOROS HIRES MORTON HALPERIN TO HEAD THE WASHINGTON DC OFFICE OF THE 'OPEN SOCIETY INSTITUTE') Soros had hired Halperin in February 2002, to head the Washington office of his tax-exempt Open Society Institute – part of Soros’ global network of Open Society institutes and foundations located in more than 50 countries around the world. Given Halperin’s history, the appointment revealed much about Soros’ political goals.--- "The Shadow Party: Part I," by David Horowitz and Richard Poe, FrontPageMagazine.com, 10/06/04
***
Morton Halperin in February 2002 became Director of the Open Society Policy Center and has worked closely ever since with its creator, eccentric billionaire international financier George Soros, who committed tens of millions of dollars in 2004 to a variety of efforts to defeat President Bush. One of these Soros-funded political efforts is the Center for American Progress (CAP), launched in summer 2003, one of the “Seven Sisters” pillars of the left’s “Shadow Government.” CAP is also known as “the official Hillary Clinton think tank,” described by Horowitz and Poe as “a platform designed to highlight Hillary’s policies and to enhance her prestige as a potential presidential candidate." According to a March 1, 2004 report by Robert Dreyfuss in The Nation, Halperin and Soros handpicked the President of CAP, former Clinton White House Chief of Staff John Podesta. . .----- Lowell Ponte, "The ABC's of Media Bias"

Evidently, Soros wishes Halperin to continue his war on America’s intelligence services. According to an Open Society Institute press release, one of Halperin’s principal assignments on the Soros team is to battle “post-September 11 policies that threaten the civil liberties of Americans.” [16] ---[16] Andrea Pringle, “George Soros Opens Washington Office: Wants Open Society Institute to Have Added Impact on Policy” (press release), Open Society Institute, Washington DC, 10 June 2002

JULY 17, 2003 : (LONG ISLAND, NY : GEORGE SOROS' BEACH HOUSE : "SHADOW PARTY" MEETING : MORTON HALPERIN ATTENDS) To the extent that the Shadow Party can be said to have an official launch date, July 17, 2003 probably fits the bill.[10] On that day, a team of political strategists, wealthy donors, leftwing labor leaders and other Democrat activists gathered at Soros’ Southampton beach house on Long Island. Aside from Soros, the most noteworthy attendee was Morton H. Halperin. ... No one has published a full list of the attendees at Soros’ July 17 meeting in Southampton, at which Soros laid out his plan to defeat President Bush.[17] However, a partial list is available in accounts that appeared in the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. These include an impressive array of former Clinton administration officials, among them Halperin. Prior to working for Soros, Halperin had served eight years under Clinton, first as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and finally as Director of Policy Planning for the Clinton State Department.
The guests at Soros’ beach house also included Clinton’s former chief of staff John Podesta; Jeremy Rosner, former special advisor to Clinton’s Secretary of State Madeline Albright; Robert Boorstin, a former advisor to Clinton’s Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin; and Steven Rosenthal, a leftwing union leader who served the Clinton White House as an advisor on union affairs to Labor Secretary Robert Reich. Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club, and Ellen Malcolm, founder and president of the pro-abortion lobby Emily’s List, also attended the meeting, as did such prominent Democrat donors as auto insurance mogul Peter B. Lewis; founder and CEO of RealNetworks  Rob Glaser; Taco Bell heir Rob McKay; and Benson & Hedges tobacco heirs Lewis and Dorothy Cullman. --- "The Shadow Party: Part I," by David Horowitz and Richard Poe, FrontPageMagazine.com, 10/06/04

Who's CAP again?

* CAP : I'm reading Madam Hillary which is a more interesting book than I thought it would be. Page 28 mentions that Hillary has organized and gotten funding (with the help of Soros and others) for several think tanks including the Center for American Progress. The Center has a 501(c)4 designation which permits the propoganda section to be more aggressively partisan.
Sara Wartell, a veteran of the Clinton administration, is the Center's chief operating officer. The Center focuses on hot button issues in Washington with an eye to influencing Congress, the public and the media through a sophisticated rapid response media campaign.
The rapid response media campaign is run by Debbie Berger, the daughter of Sandy Berger! ----82 posted on 08/11/2004 3:46:40 PM PDT by Peach

Here's the way to think about Specter:

Republican Senators who have been around a long time are afraid of the prospect of what a Democrat President will do with the NSA unless they are able to find a way to regulate what the Executive does ahead of time. Specter is just afraid of a Hillary presidency, that's all. Otherwise, he would not care. He actually has a good point, as I would not want Democrats to have full authority over wiretaps either.

Congress will just write a bill that brings specificity to the NSA activities, and that will be that. Democraps are just trying to make points with their base because they are broke and need their support.

As for being 'worn out', a good pilot should be expected to fly multiple sorties on the target before climbing out of the jet.

Morton H. Halperin is a Senior Vice President of the Center for American Progress, where he directs the Security and Peace Initiative (jointly sponsored by The Century Foundation). He is also the Executive Director of the Open Society Policy Center and Director of U.S. Advocacy at the Open Society Institute. Dr. Halperin served in the Clinton, Nixon and Johnson administrations, most recently as Director of the Policy Planning Staff at the Department of State (1998-2001).

Blooming-idiot now trying to limit the financial liability of the city to the worth of the ferry.

What a despicable thing to do. But it's NY and who knows how the Court will decide.

Not only has he protected Weinshall but it's clear that she is never to be mentioned as Schumer's wife.

Just look at how Blooming-idiot is protecting Mattingly, the head of the Children's Services.

The City is turning back into the dump it was before Rudy.
