CARACAS, Venezuela (UPI) -- Venezuela`s military reserve units have been increased to 2 million soldiers, Globovision TV reported.

The county has been aggressively recruiting citizens to join the reserves since last year.

President Hugo Chavez has stressed the need for Venezuela to bolster its home defenses against foreign invaders.

The leftist Venezuelan leader has accused Washington of trying to undermine his authority and take over the country`s lucrative oil industry.

Chavez announced last year that Venezuela was purchasing 100,000 Russian assault rifles and other armaments.

Looks like Russia will be getting a contract for 1,900,000 more Kalashnikovs, 200,000 RPG launchers, tanks, and other weapons, and more work for the Spetsnaz and Chinese trainers.

Chavez, Castro, Ortega, Morales, Jaibao (China) and Putin (Russia/"Former" USSR) have Red Dawn on their minds.

"Maybe he's got more than just defense on his agenda?"

They're for his red shirts/brown shirts/goon squad/block committee, whatever he calls them. When he declares a dictatorship he'll need them against his Army and other forces.

He already has the ideological support for a dictatorship, his recent ommitment to "Socialism." He needs a pretextual emergency for the dictatorship, so far his provoking of America hasn't given him one. The Pat Robertson threat was not viable.

Russia has sold Venezuela some MI-17 helicoplters, and have stated they'd sell them Migs.Chavez is in a position to reek havoc down there.Chavez is also tight with Iran which is more bad news.

Ya know, this sounds a lot like ORwell's 1984. Gotta be sure those beastly Eurasians don't try anything.

Aye, could be. It's like the Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times." I keep telling my wife that this year could be the most interesting in our lives.

From a military standpoint, these reserves are useless. (They're not like U.S. military reserves.)

But they're a good way to help the government indoctrinate, intimidate and control the population.

Aggressively recruiting? Does this mean forced induction? I mean a draft was ok when we had it but we didn't call it "aggressively recruiting", we called it what it was, conscription. Sounds as if a bunch of these boys were made an offer they couldn't refuse!

I can't say for sure Chavez doesn't dream of that, but Vicente Fox would object. Invading the US is his turf, so he feels

I wonder if The Russians sold on credit?

Back after the fall of the Soviet Union I was attempting to do business woith some of the new entrapremurs. They took orders from large companies that wanted to buy lots of stuff fax machines boom boxes printers, computers etc but had no hard currency. They wanted to trade discounted bank certificates for the merchandise. These certificates were tied to debt instruments from foreign governments. The certificates were good for credit in the countries.

The soviets got hosed by producing all the weapons etc and essentially swapping for worthless paper used by their banks to colleralise credit to the Soviet companies needing money for payroll. A humongous scam where air supported more air .
