When George W. Bush, then a gubernatorial candidate, accidentally killed a protected deer during a dove shoot in 1994, he and his press aide swiftly decided on a strategy: confess fast.
"People watch the way you handle things. They get a feeling they like and trust you or they don't," said a biography of Mr Bush.

No antlers involved.
D. Boone kil a bar on this tree.
I was kind of wondering how the heck someone could kill a deer while dove hunting. Especially kill a deer accidentally...
Killed a deer/Killdeer.....minor distinction....when all you want to do is have a "gotcha" moment.
Jeez! Freaking reporteres.
How did he hit a killdeer? Those things can MOVE. Must have been an accident. :)
Yep. Almost as tough as a 'doodle...
An animal vs a friend.
I guess that this non-story will continue to proliferate until every "journalist" in every newspaper and advertising circular has had their say.
Fortunately, most Americans are already tired of this non-story and are turning their backs on the publications that continue pushing it.
I expect they will have comppleted their rant sometime around the year 2027.
Caroline is one stupid suint.
Send me a promo copy..
Nope. Never has. Never will.
I am very tired of it and refuse to read/listen to any more on the subject, except on FR of course.
I accidentally nailed one just as the sun was going down (still legal time). Came in jinking just like a dove. I was sitting on the tailgate with my wife and another hunting buddy. We watched it coming long enough for him to say: "Think you can take that high dove?"
I stepped off the tailgate, dropped a shell into the chamber and swung through. The bird fell about 20 yards behind. The wife went off with the dog to get it while I was high-fiving my friend on a great shot.
She came back with the bird. Ooops, kildeer, not dover. Turned myself into F&G. They said: we appreciate your honesty, don't do it again.
It can happen.
We mostly call them kildees in Texas and it's entirely possible to kill one if they come in with a flight of doves to a grain field.
I've never killed one, but I've mistakenly shot at one before.
They don't resemble Bambi in the least, and this is a stupid gaffe by the Financial Times.
Remember when the media was saying "It's only sex."
Well this is only an accident.
Get a life, press corps.
The police were called right away. The local press were called first thing the next morning.
The press is hyperventilating because thats what they do. If it wasn't this, it would be something else. Think back a week; they were hyperventilating then, and Cheney hadn't yet shot anyone. Next week it will be something else.
Its hard to take these people seriously, and I don't.
Once I was disking a field when this killdeer started crippling around trying to get me to follow her off away from her eggs...Every round I made she got more frantic in her antics to get me to follow her off..Her eggs on the ground were easy to spot and when it finally came time to disk that spot she held her ground about 6 inches in front of her eggs......I pulled the front tractor tire of this huge tractor which had the ground shaking up to within a few inchs of the mama bird......She never moved an inch, she made her stand......I got off the tractor moved the nest over to ground which had been worked and all was well.....Killdeers can be fierce....just like your mama.....
We don't care about Vice president Cheney's unfortunate accident and we all hope his friend recovery. WHAT ABOUT THE SADAM TAPES!
I'm appalled by the media's "need to know" mentality. The media (paparazzi) were, in part, responsible for the death of Princess Diana.
Cheney acted like any responsible citizen; having his friend immediately transported to the hospital and
reporting the incident to the police. But it was another chance for the MSN's to throw more barbs at the Bush administration and they're taking every opportunity to enhance the story with their own evil litany.
You know, the press is hypocritical.
They didn't criticize Bill Clinton when didn't immediately notify the press after he discharged his gun in the Oval Office and shot an innocent young intern in the face.
Different kind of gun, of course, but the principle is the same.
I have always marveled at the behavior of momma killdeers when the nest is in danger.
"This is my rifle, this my gun.
This is for fighting, this is for fun."
We have Mocking bird in our neighborhood that during nesting season every year stalks my 85lb Rhodesian Ridgeback. This tough little dude has bit my dog's butt more than once and he's almost been chomped for his efforts a few times. If the dog's in the front yard, the bird uses a street light as a base for his attacks. If the dog's in the house, this little brute will go from window to window to challenge the dog through the glass. Fun to watch.
I've also seen a Mocking bird purposely dive into the grill of on coming car to attack it. That one didn't go so well...
The Kildeer should be made the mascot of some military unit!
You owe me a new keyboard
What Cheney needs to do...is stand up and absolutely promise that the next time he goes hunting...several top journalists will be invited along with the VP (cameras even allowed)...oh, and if one of them happens to get in the wrong direction and gets winged by Cheney again...the other boys on the trip can take pictures and rush video feed live back to CNN Central...especially when Wolfe Blitzer is hit and he is trying to do a live report with pellet wounds to his chest...gasping for breathe...reporting live from a "private hunting club in west Texas, Wolfe Blitzer...just hit and wounded...I'm doing ok...but we need America to immedately know what happened. The ambulance will be here in a few minutes to whisk me away...but while we are waiting...a few words from the VP....When you pointed my way Mr. VP....were you thinking or reacting? And if you had a second chance to fire again...would you?"
We could watch this entire event with Wolfe...live...and really get some thrills out of it...and the CNN ratings would soar as Wolfe gasped, and gasped...and almost yelling at the camera guy to get a close-up.
How'd it taste? Just like venison.
Here are some facts about Cheney that no one has yet seemed to reveal.
Among the sciolistic scriveners of the MSM it is well known that Cheney is Bush's hit man. It is equally well known the GWB loves his father. When his father lost the election to Klinton it was mainly due to the fact that the MSM thought his Vice-President was a joke. So GWB never forgave that VP for the loss and ordered Cheney to kill him last weekend. Unfortunately Cheney got his orders confused and went looking for the wrong Quayle, ergo he shot the wrong person. Don't tell David Gregory about this, or he'll cry for a month.:^)
What would you expect from a London FT reporter? She probably has no idea what any of these animals even look like nor what kind of gun is used for hunting them.
Absolutely great! A picture truly is worth a thousand words and I only wish I could deliver this to her in person... it would be priceless!
Too funny!!! I like the way you think!!
What's the difference between Caroline and the Panama Canal?
The Panama Canal is a busy ditch.
I hope she gets a thousand e-mails telling her a killdeer is a bird.
Here's the whole article, via MSN......
